Since my receiver does not have HDMI audio, when I get a blu-ray player should I use the 6 channel inputs to get DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD surround sound? Or am I limited to optical audio.

Also, is TOS the same as optical audio?

Thanks!

Toslink is the same as optical audio.
Make sure whatever BD player you get has internal decoders. Mine for instance (Pioneer Elite BD 95FD) will only decode TrueHD via the analog outputs. DTS-MA on the other hand is decoded as DTS 1.5 Mbs. A good player will be able to do both and then convert the signal to LPCM 24bit/48khz via the analog outputs.

So the short answer is yes, I will get DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD surround sound with the 6 channel input?

I'm surprised that a $1k player does not support HDMI audio for True HD audio!

Thanks!

Well, mine will bitstream both formats via HDMI (my receiver decodes them), it just won't internally decode the DTS-MA audio. There are others on this forum more well versed than I who could point you in the right direction (I believe the new Panny internally decodes both -- check the CD/DVD/HD BD DVD forum for that thread).

I'm in the same boat. I am waiting for new Panasonic DMP-BD50 ($400-$500), which can internally decode DTS-MA & TrueHD and send out via the 5.1 Analog Output, which you would feed to your 5.1 Analog Input of your receiver.
