I know that this must have been asked a few times already, but prices change so fast I figured I'd throw it out there. With the holiday season coming up, there should be some sales around the corner.

My dad is looking to get about a 52 inch TV for his room.
His budget is under $2k.
I doubt that he can notice the difference between 720p and 1080p.
He sits about 12 feet from the screen.
He claims to not like the ones that have the speakers on the sides. "Makes them look too fat."

What would give him the best quality for his buck?
Are there brands that I should seek out?
Are there brands that he should stay away from?

Thanks in advance.:D

Are you considering purchasing from online retailer or bricks and mortar?

Usually online you can get better deals. I recommend the Panny 50" viera I saw at BB for about 2500.00(1080p), that means you'll likely find it online for less and it's great set, a lot of bang for the buck.

Stay away from Dell, Westinghouse and Olevia. From personal experience they're not worth it.

Thanks for the reply.

So far I have only looked at Best Buy's website. The deal I liked is the HP plasma PL5072N. It's a 50" 720p on sale for 1499.99. I looked around on the web to see if I could find a better deal on it but haven't found it for less yet. He's always said that he wanted a plasma. Not sure how good the HP models are.

Trying to stay under $2k.
Doesn't need to be 1080p as he can't even tell the difference between SD, ED and HD on my 106" screen.

I'm off to more websites now.

Give www.bestbuyplasma.com a try, they have pretty good prices from what I've seen. And no, they don't just sell Plasma's. I'd stick with Sony, Sharp and Samsung for LCD, Panny and Pioneer for Plasma, and Mitsubishi for DLP's.

DLP = Best bang for the buck, but some color washout in brightly lit rooms.
Plasma = Great picture, but screen glare bright rooms.

LCD = Best picture in a room with a lot of light.
