Looking to put together a 5.1 system. I have NO idea where to begin what receiver ect... But I know I should avoid a box kit. Room is ~2000 cu ft. I don't need to speed a 1000, ok to be under that. Advice please on which brands, speakers and subs to look for.

I am in a Condo, concrete building if that makes any difference.

Really prefer the smaller speakers(subzero). So I will probably go with those if I can get a reasonable price in Canada. Receiver with AirPlay seems nice. As for sub anyone have suggestions for what will work and if not what brands/models to look for?

Looks like the Yamaha is discontinued. There is a new one RX-A740 but it is around 600 bucks, the sub I found in canada for 240. The speakers well I think I would have to order from the link you posted but their shipping is a little steep to here. Is there some similar brands / other speakers I could look into? ( I honestly have no idea about what to even look for in speakers)

Those do look nice. I think I will be buying the Fluance speaker set from best buy.

How does this Sound:
Receiver: RX-A740 ($600)
Speakers: Fluance Set from Best Buy ($250)
Sub: NX-BAS-500 ($250)
$1100

OR

Receiver: RX-A740 ($600)
Speakers: 4 x superzero 2.1 or superone, and supercenter 2.1 ($750)
Sub: NX-BAS-500 ($250)
~$1600
(2.1 or 2.0 for the speakers depending on what I find for deals)

I think I will have to change out the receiver for this combo.

I think I should go with better speakers and downgrade the AVR to 5.1 Options? Suggestions?

Thinking Yamaha RX-V477 or 577 for an extra $50

Yamaha RX-V577 - $399
Dayton SUB-1200 - $262 NXG NX-BAS-500 - $270
Fluance SX 5.0 kit - $280
Stands - $36
rubber shelf liner (for your speaker stand platforms) - $3
100' OFC speaker cable - $40
Subwoofer cable - $9

Total: $1037-ish

The frequency response of the AV series mains you've been considering looks a little wild.

The next step up, the SX series, looks much more reasonable. This is a graph from the bookshelfs.

With a subwoofer (and the Dayton SUB-1200 belies its inexpensive price tag), you'll be crossing your mains over around 80Hz anyway. With that in mind, there's little advantage to having towers over bookshelfs. Since the bookshelfs are cheaper (and honestly, appear better controlled), go for those.

(I know the scales of the graphs are mismatched and misleading, but I still think the SX bookshelfs are the better choice.)

It's not easy shopping for you Canadians who don't have U.S. PO boxes. :x

That is a good system Rojo put together for you. I would only trade the sub to NXG 500 since it's cheaper and a bit better sub.

Where can he get the NXG sub cheaper? I saw it on Amazon.ca for $519 shipped.

varsis, if you really can get the NX-BAS-500 for $250, jump on it! If not, well, the Dayton SUB-1200 is still a worthwhile alternative for your budget.

This is my preference for your Canadian tight budget, and I would
go 3.1 to start and save for the surrounds later.

Crutchfield Ca

Denon S500BT receiver

Boston A25 speakers - 3 each for the front l/c/r speakers

Then pick your subwoofer - your call on that one, however looks
like Dayton will fit the budget.

Them Bostons look nice Z. He can get 5 of those and be done. They remind me of my NXG 4.1.

I can get the NX for 270.
I am still unsure which speakers to get. I will most likely get the RXV577 for receiver, I have mostly apple product around and air play would be nice! The bostons are nice but $800 for 5 speakers is a little pricey.

Then get the NXG sub. Don't overlook the Pioneers. They are good speakers and well loved and reviewed. 3.1 is a good start, then add more later. That's how I started and most people here. Build slowly thus no regrets. :)

NXG has made a couple of subs. Can you confirm that the model you can get for $270 is the NX-BAS-500? The other model wasn't as good, and you'd be better off getting the Dayton.

Would you mind sharing the link where you can get the NX-BAS-500 for $270 in Canada? I'd like to be able to point others to it if needed. That seems like a pretty good deal.

NXG has had some amp problems in the past - and being in Ca, I would
really check into the customer service.

Depends on the sound quality level that you can live with.
