5.1 surround or rear surround

I have a 7.1 reciever, however I set up a 5.1 system (because of cosmetics, wiring headaches, etc.). The 2 surround that I have set up are on the rear wall about 30 degrees behind the listening postion and are bipole/dipole. I have 2 questions on this set up.
1. Do I hook the surrounds to the surround channel or rear surround channels? The reciever has a virtual rear surround feature to add rear channel sound to the sides, which I would choose for sure if they were mounted to the sides.
2. My 2 front mains are polk rti8s (floorstanders) and I have a svs pb 10 subwoofer. The speakers are good, however not the best on bass. Should I set the speaker type to big or small?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks/

Connect to the surround channels, not the rear surround (rear surround is for channels 6 and 7)

All speakers Small, Subwoofer=Yes, and 80 Hz xover.
