I have decided on the HSU STF-2 ($349) or VTF-1 ($379)

Is the variable tuning worth $30?

The STF2 is like a VTF1 stuck in max extension mode. If you want the frequency response to go down to 25 hertz, just go with the STF2. However, the VTF1 in max output mode will definitely have punchier mid-bass. You might prefer that, or you might prefer the deeper bass. Some people like to run it in max extension for movies and max output for everything else, its not hard to switch it between modes. I think it's worth the extra 30 dollars. Maybe someday you will upgrade, and you can keep the VTF1 around as a endtable/midbass module.

I finally made up my mind

This is what I ended up with:
Replaced my Sony fronts (small satellites) with Infinity P152's
Replaced my Sony center (small satellite) with Infinity PC250
Replaced my Sony sub with 2 Emotiva Ultra 10's
I may use the leftover Sony satellites for rear

I went to the Emotiva location after finding out it was 15 miles from my house, they demo'd the sub. I got one and liked it so much, and the price was so good, that I bought another one (with my wife's permission :) ) the next day. The people at Emotive were great, the demo room was full of awesome equipment.

I am very pleased with how this sounds.
