I've decided on an SVS sub, but still unsure about the rest of the speakers. I've been thinking Axiom (60's, QS8 for side and rear, and VP150 center), but now I'm seeing posts about Swan, Boston Acoustic, etc. The options seem endless, and without listening to all are there specifics about each brand that might help me at least rule some out?

Any thoughts on best value?

If we could hear thru your ears, we could tell you

but since we don't, the best person to auditon speakers is you. Don't eliminate anything by what others say. take CDs , DVs that you are familiar with along with a notepad and pen abd start auditioning take notes on each speaker make/model listing likes dislikes etc. Thats the best way you can find what you are looking for. You don't want to regret someone elses opinion later on

And the 30 day return policy means that you won't be stuck with anything you don't like. You get to hear how they sound in your home.

You hit the nail on the head, there are several brands that present great value for money and in all but the most drastic cases, without listening to them, it will be difficult to recommend one brand over the other.

Numbers are a place to start, but, how you place/ use the speakers has a much greater impact on sound quality. Things like, leaving room for rear ports, toe-in, acoustic treatments, electronic equalization to counter room effects, etc.

Regards specifications, look for the following,
Frequency response = Flatter is better, look for +/- 3dB ratings
Sensitivity = Higher is better, anything >=88 dB
Impedance rating = 6-8ohms, makes it easier to drive without a dedicated amp

Try to keep the Mains and Center limited to brand and series to ensure timber matching. This helps get smooth transition in multichannel audio material.

I am very happy with my Axioms, but then again, everyone on the forum is happy with their selection.

From a bricks and mortar value perspective, perhaps consider the JBL Studio-L series and the Revel Concerta line (and the Inifinity Beta's, on which the Concerta's are, I believe, at least loosely based). These are all terrific speaker lines. In terms of internet direct, lots out there including Onix (123), Dana, Acculine, and Swan, all of which people seem to regard immensely.

Enjoy the auditions and acquisitions! :)

I have that same axiom set up and I'm very happy with it. ... 5.1 set up though.

Shameless plug - At that price point, you could audition an Era system of 2 x D5 mains and a D5 LCR and 4 x D4 surrounds and still have enough left over for a PB13-Ultra. I'm getting all goose-bumpy just thinking about it.:D

At the very least, it's worth auditioning them if you can find a dealer.
