I made a visit to one of my favorite retailers today to pup a new coaxial cable. While there I noticed they had a sale on the Yamaha 4600, just under $1,300.00 CAD. It's about what they are charging for the new Pioneer 72 and much cheaper than the 74 or even the Yammie 2600. I am seriously thinking of pulling the trigger, but, I wanted to get some feedback from you good folks here. They said they are making way for the replacement for the 4600. I'm wondering if I should wait or go for one of the other aforementioned models. Your advice is appreciated.

That is a hell of a price. I can't say whether or not to get it but if you're looking to drop 1300 on a receiver right now then there are a lot of worse ways to do it IMO. THe cheapest I've seen that unit is $1000 US refurbed. It's still about a grand for a 2500 on sale up here.

Thank you, I knew I wasn't crazy, I may take that deal. They did say, just as I was leaving, that their annual birthday sale is next month and it's going to be even more enticing. I hate all of this baiting! But, at some point you have to take the plunge and get off of the ride for a while.

All those prices are alot cheaper than here in NL, I just paid $1450 for the 2600, regular price was $1699.
Eddie, if upscaling is of interest to you than you should consider the 2600, the 4600 doesn't have this feature, but it does have i-link which the 2600 does not have. Other than that the receivers are very similar in features.

Newfiestang50,
I have held back on the purchase because of that quandery. I like the upconverting feature on the 2600 and was told that this same store will have their annual birthday sale when everything, including hopefully the 2600, will be on sale. I am leaning toward the 2600 at this point and from the hints I get from this site, it will be more than worth waiting for.

A store in my city has the 2500 for $900, the 1600 for $1300, the 2600 for $1500 & the 4600 for $1200, all prices Canadian.
I'm very tempted, but I think I'll wait for the HDMI issues to be sorted out in a year or so.

Reviews?

I have only seen one owner review on the Audio Review website and I'm still waiting for the review from this site next month. In the meantime, could someone give some feedback on how the sound of the 2600 compares to the 4600 or even the competitive offerings from Pioneer(74 and 72) and Denon(3806 and 4306)?

Couple of other things

The specs of the 2600 and 4600 are very similar so you would expect the sound to be similar also. A couple of things I am aware of which are different between the 2;

The video up-scaling, up-conversion stuff (right to HDMI, 4600 is only to component)

Burr Brown DACS - meant to be good, don't know much about this

If you are running 5.1 (rather than 7.1) you are able to use the other 2 amps to bi-amp your front speakers

4600 has i.LINK (firewire) but only useful, obviously, if you have any players with firewire, which I don't currently

I will be interested to see what the 4600 is replaced with, I would have thought the 2600 was the replacement???? What will it be called? The 4700??
