4 Subs and a Velodyne SMS-1?

Hi all.

I am running a total of 4 subs:

2 HSU VTF-3HO's plus Turbos. One is in the left front corner. Lots of boundary gain.

The second VTF-3HO plus Turbo is along the front wall about 10 feet from the one in the corner.

I have an SVS 20-39PCi next to the right VTF-3 HO because the location gets very little boundary reinforcement and the 20-39PCI adds a lot of oomph.

My 4th sub is an original ported HSU MBM-12 placed along the left hand side wall not far from the couch.

I don't know if a Velodyne SMS-1 will add much to my system. My opportunity on the SMS-1 is closing fast.

Thanks In Advance.

An SMS-1 only works with two subs, so I don't think this product will work for you with that setup. If it were me, I'd collocate the HOs and use it with them. I don't think you'd need to run it with the MBM.

SMS-1 can actually manage 3 subs, not 2.

With respect to how much SMS-1 can improve things, I would suppose it ultimately depends on what kind of response you're getting at your listening position(s) now. Do you have any measurement equipment currently?

Does that mean the XLR out is independent of the RCA outs?
All I know is that it's got three RCA LFE outs which I assume correspond to what it's rated to control.

Got it. Just read a review that states that it is only able to apply one set of correction filters to all three outputs though, so unless the subs are identical and collocated, it will be an issue IMO.

Well that would indeed reduce its utility. Flipping through the manual, that would seem to be the case

A Word About Connecting More Than One Subwoofer
Note that your SMS-1 can control up to three subwoofers. Each of the three subwoofers will receive the same
conditioned signal from the SMS-1. If you wish to run more then three subwoofers, or wish to individually
customize the signal to different subwoofers, you will need more than one SMS-1 connected in a “daisy-chain”
configuration.

I don't believe the SMS-1 can manage 2 subs independently. I think it performs 1 EQ configuration and you can apply that single EQ to one to three subs.

^I thought the same thing as as far it being summed. I'm sure there's something else, but the only thing that I know of that will EQ for 4 subs independently is JBL's BassQ. That's the first thing I'd start asking around about. Not sure that anyone here at AH has ever used one though, sorry. Unless the Velo is really cheap these days, I personally would prefer something much more advanced, I think that unit is extremely rudimentary, if very easy to use, so far as I understand it.

Another interesting trait about the JBL that it's supposed to come with FOUR mics and stands, that are all used simultaneously, I think it was for 16 total measurements? I read that it's designed after Floyd Toole's methodology, I wouldn't know however.

I have no idea how (un)reliable some vendors are, but some of the first prices I saw were lower than I expected. I thought this would be a little over 1k. (I immediately wonder if some prices I see are "too good to be true".)

Here is a manual.

Velodyne offers an add-on for the SMS that has 5 mics :D

I've used the SMS on the DD-15 and it works very well.
