With my limted knowledge from reading on this site and Sound & Vision, I get the impression that 4 ohm speakers are the higher quality ones. Is this generally true?
Also, I don't know if the recent failure of my 17 yr old receiver could be due to me upgrading my old 8 ohm center speaker with a 4 ohm newer speaker (didn't realize it was 4 ohm until today). The new speaker works great, but 2 days after I swapped it out for the old 8 ohm speaker, the left and right front channels went completely out. Likely relationship?

Regarding impedance and quality, the answer is no.

Re that old receiver, impossible to say, and cost prohibitive to find out. Looks like you're going shopping.

Seriously, I have no life.

A long time ago I asked Dr. Floyd Toole this. He said low impedance is a bad design. ;)

Mysteriously, my receiver channels all came back on last night when I arrived home from work!?
