Well, I've listened to some things now and think it does need some more tweaking. One thing that confuses me, if I check the EQ parameters after doing the auto setup, they are wildly different for the front L and R speakers! Not only completely different in their settings, but also in the frequency steps that are used. Does this make sense?
Just as an example. In the "normal" setting the selected Freq are:
For L: 50,100,160,570,1.0k,1.4k etc
For R: 50,80,130,250,640,1.4k,3.2k etc

does this make sense? My room is very different on each side, left has a bookshelf about 3 or 4 ft from the speaker, r has a long wall of windows and a couch. Surprised me to see this difference.

Plus an other question and maybe somebody can just point me to the right instructions, I have the digital Radioshack meter but I don't understand why I'd want to hook it up to the 3805 with a cable?

Man, this is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be
Would it make sense to buy a test CD or DVD?

Thanks!

Oliver

PS: as for the sub distance, the manual says that "speakers with built in filters such as subwoofers might be set with a value that differs from the physical distance because of the interna electrical delay"
Doesn't say to set it to the real distance which - in my case - is some 12 ft less than the auto measurement set it at.
Would you change it to the actual distance?

you would run the auto setup with your spl meter attached your denon instead of the denon mic. some have said they acheived better results going that route. plus if you purchase a spl meter from radioshack vs. a denon for $65 you'll save some money and be able to use your spl meter later for different things.

I set up my system with a denon mic, then manually, then mic again. I go back and forth between normal room eq and room eq off. I cant complain either way except that the mic had my sub waaaay off. Besides that I have found you could spend the next month trying to get your system sounding "perfect". I'm pleased easily so I dont put to much pressure on myself. it takes the fun out of it. with all the knowledge I've found on this site, I'm sure my system is setup as good as it's gonna get.

get it setup to the best of your ability, stop stressing and enjoy some movies ;)

well that's my 2 cents

interesting, did not know that would work. Guess I'll have to find a really long cable to try that, seems worth it though.

same here, but I like a bit heavier bass :)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of tweaking endlessly, I just want to have a setting that sound good with all sources and kinds of music, then maybe make little tweaks here and there on occasion. But it's definitely more involved than I thought it would be....

I just posted that elsewhere, but since you have one, do you use the analog or digital spl? I got the digital since I thought it might be "better" and I like numbers, but most seem to use the analog. Should both work the same, right?

I have the digital meter. It's all they had. As far as a difference between the two, I don't know, I've only used the one I have now. It took me awhile to get everything setup the way "I" like it but I'm there.

thanks, I guess I'll keep it. Now I just wish that somebody, anybody, would carry that AVIA DVD here but it looks like I'll have to Amazon it. Called every electronic store and not a one has it in stock, surprising, since they all sell home theaters.

well, I've gotta do some more measuring this weekend I guess.

Maybe the tweaking will never end for any of us. Just make sure you get a couple of movies in this weekend. Possibly a movie with lots of EXPLOSIONS. Lol. :D

I got a Velodyne SPL-1000R sub, which includes a set-up mike, at the same time as my 3805. I used the Velo mike to set up the 3805, and it worked very well. Checking it with my RS SPL meter, the distance & SPL measurements were right on (except the sub, which was measured by the Denon as 10 ft further than actual distance).
I also tried this with the RS mike in the SPL meter, and it too worked well. Save your money

I did not realize that I could use the spl meter as a mike, and got the denon mike instead. Paid less than $40 so it's not worth the hassle of returning it, if the e-bay seller would even take it back. Oh well.

I tride the auto setup with the denon, worked great for movies, but for music it was way off. Not enough midrange, too much high, and definitely not enough subwoofer. Used the spl meter mike next and the result is almost perfect. I'm waiting for my copy of the avia DVD to finetune the system, but I listened to a wide range of music over the weekend, from rock to pop to rap to jazz to classical piano and hawaiian guitar, all sounds really really nice!

Who knows, maybe I'll find some use for that denon mike in an other application someday, use it on the computer or something.

Thanks for all the helpful posts here!

I may have to give that a try. Although I can't complain about my current setup, but who knows.

Oliver what cable did you use to connect your SPL meter to your Denon?

Hi,

just plug a single audio cable, RCA type at both ends.
If the overall lenght is a problem, just use the female/female adaptors, in order to achieve the necessary lenght until the listening position.

Cheers / Avliner.

I just got a 20 ft audio cable at Best Buy, worked fine. Could not find a single wire audio cable.

Auto/Manual Room EQ is not working for me - HELP !

Hi,

Recently I bought Denon AVR 3805.

I hooked up all my Speakers [RM20 - Polk Audio], connected the mic DMS305 and started setting up as per the Manual.
All my speakers are working as I can see the noise burst from receiver when I check "Channel Level" under "SPEAKER SETUP"

When I go to Auto setup and click on "Start", it comes out of that menu and goes to next menu, i.e "Manual EQ Setup". One more
funny thing is, in "Manual EQ Setup" also, I can not hear sound from the speakers, but can here when I check, " Channel Level" !!!

Please suggest/ let me know where exactly I am doing wrong ???

Thanks

I fell into the same trap. If you just hit enter you'll go back to the former menu and advance one step dow.
Notice on the screen that next to start (or what it says) there's a small triangle like so: <
that indicates that you have to click the left button on your remote's center control ring. Up and down moves up and down, but in a couple of screens you have to press the left direction to activate something. There might also be cases where you have to press the right button, indicated by a > triangle.

I hope this helps!

You might have the same problem with the manual setup, I think you also have to click left or right, but I'm not sure. I only looked at that menu once.

Good luck!

LOL...I did that last week. You'd think I'd learn after using the auto setup for the 10,000 time. Duh
