Seriously, I have no life.
For some reason they mark the weight 10 (something) which = 1gm.

If anything positive has come out of this - my TT is definitely set up correctly now.
That is your silver lining.

By the way the stylus getting stuck, probably means those records are pressed on recycled vinyl. This may be a problem surfacing again. This got to be huge problem in the late seventies and early eighties.

They take old discs and don't bother to take the labels off. The paper comes to the surface and causes what you are complaining about. It gets worse over time as the paper comes to the surface. I have some LPs pressed in that era that are just about useless.

The best pressings were between about 1958 and 1972. Then the short term profit boys started ruining it for everyone, and caused the grief we are now in. It sounds as if they are still very much with us and no lessons learned.

It's a shame b/c I bet they would sell more copies with positive word of mouth. It's a shame the bands don't get invovled more.

I have a copy of the White Stripes Elephant and it sounds amazing. One of the newer releases that sounds great.

I'm guessing I'll start focusing on getting good, original copies of records because it seems to pay off more in the long run. Unless I read that a reissue sounds awesome - forget it.

That's one good thing Simply Vinyl did, always used virgin vinyl. That means it's not recycled.

I'm going to pick one up this weekend to see how it sounds.

The 45 rpm Metallica albums are scheduled for delivery today. Jam packed evening and morning tomorrow but I should be able to check in tomorrow evening with the report.

45 RPM vs. 33 RPM

So I've received all 3 of the 45 RPM Metallica albums and wanted to post my thoughts.

Kill Em All is still the best sounding of the 3 records.

MOP and RTL were significantly better than the 33 RPM. The solos bite through more and I am hearing certain things that I've never heard before.

And Justice for All is very good but it doesn't offer significant improvement over the 2 LP release (radio stations received).

I am waiting for my replacements of the 33s to come and will probably hold onto them just because I'll collect them.

The cool thing is - I managed to pick up and origina VG+++ Ride the Lightning and Garage Days at a new local record store I discovered. also picked up Black Album on Simply Vinyl.

If you're a hardcore Metallica fan it may be worth it to buy the records - just don't bother with the 33RPM.

Well I threw on Master of Puppets tonight on the record player (45 rpm series) and listened to Battery and Master of Puppets while playing the DCC 24k Gold CD re-master that was done by Steve Hoffman using the all-vacuum tube mastering system. I level matched first so I wasn't biased by volume either way.

Each time I'd go back and forth I found the high-end on the vinyl to be over-pronouced, almost like the way Bose makes their systems sound. It was hot and it is missing low end. The CD wasn't quite as clean on the highs but another way I'd describe it is not as shrill, it sounded more natural. The low end on the CD sounded better too.

I found myself wishing for a compromise between the two.
