3 Year Warranty on receiver necessary?

Hello,

I am about to purchase a Yamaha RX-V659 receiver from pricegrabber.com for about $350, however, because its not through a Yamaha authorized dealer the 1 year manufacturer warranty is void. The item is brand new factory sealed, and the ID store is offering a 3-year warranty for $80. They do not offer less than 3 years and it seemed ridiculous to pay over 20% more for a warranty on something that is brand new. Obviously I'm leaning towards taking my chances and skipping the warranty but I wanted to run this by everyone here who has much more experience dealing with receivers (this will be my first one) and ID stores. Any suggestions??

If they aren't authorized, that would likely mean their service isn't either, so technically speaking, I can't see how their warranty would benefit you?? That is the pesimissic view of it anyway. If it gives you a little piece of mind, then it would be worth it, but I'd probably be on the same side of your thinking and go without it. OR, shop around authorized dealers and see what kind of pricing you can get...

Thankfully, I haven't had to use it on my receivers, but I have had to use it on my integrated amps.

I tend to stay with authorized dealers and avoid third party (or any) additional warranties. If you track the warranties you will find that you'll quickly be in the black, even if you get nailed on an expensive product every once in a while.

Bear in mind the warranty is only as good as the company offering it. Buying your electronics this way is a gamble. I would not buy the warranty because I would suspect it would not be upheld. If I shop around locally I can usually get close enough to the Internet price to buy from a local B&M.

The store was powersellernyc.com and they seem to be rated pretty high satisfaction wise through pricegrabber but ofcourse as you all mentioned that doesn't mean their warranty is worth much. I will look around to see what I can find that is close in price but comes with the manufacturer warranty.

That is akin to my view on extra warranties. When a salesman is pushing his extended warranty on me I always say "I don't buy extended warranties. In fact all the money I've saved not buying warranties is paying for this purchase today."

I haven't yet heard a good comeback to this objection. I guess that line hasn't hit their role play yet.

The factory warranty on authorized Yamaha receivers is actually two years.

You can get an HTR-5960 (basically the 659 without a 12v trigger and a couple little things) for about the same price from an authorized internet dealer.

I'd much rather have a two year warranty from Yamaha than a three year warranty from an unauthorized dealer. I like to think the factory techs have an edge on the non-factory techs, particularly in parts availability and the latest fixes.
