3.5mm to speaker wire?

Seriously nooby question, but I'll ask anyways. Previously I've always had speakers that had a decent amount of bass. But this pair has basically none. Now, I have a old subwoofer lying around that came with a cheap 2.1 speaker system, but it uses a 3.5mm jack. I have no problem with cutting off the jack and getting the wire out from inside, but would like to know if/how it works before I do that work.

Does that sub have an AC cord or a wall-wort cord? It sounds like it part of a self-powered system.

No, but it's so tiny and should use very little power. I plugged it in once without the system and bass still came out. And besides it's more a question of if/how it can be done, not so much of will it work with speaker.

What are the brand and model number of your subwoofer? And the brand and model number of the receiver or amplifier you wish to use? And the speakers?

Very often, a 3.5 mm jack is used for line level signals, not speaker level signals.

Beat me to it, however in this case the OP says the speakers are not powered, which seems odd with that input type. Usually for this sort of system, that 3.5mm jack is to send signal to the speakers and the sub has the input, not the other way around, so it could be an output not an input.

It's a s subwoofer that came with a cheap Altec Lansing set. The amp is a Pioneer SX-40. I guess I'll just buy a pre amp and a cheap subwoofer instead (that's what you do right, if there is no subwoofer input?).
