3.1 speaker recommendation roughly 1000$

Greetings Audiophiles:
I am a newby and this is the third time I am picking your collective brains to cobble together a second system for downstairs. I have a pair of JBL control monitors 4312A's to use as bookshelves and an Epik Empire dual 15" sub. I am looking for a set of tower speakers and center channel for roughly 1000$ base. The room is 18 X 15, 8 ft ceiling. I will likely be powering with a Yamaha Rx-565. I will use them for 80% home theater 20% muzak.

I have trolled through various postings here and my short list includes Ascend CMT 340, SVS-STS, EMP E55Ti, Infinity Primus 360/362, but I would gladly like to have other recommendations. Oh yeah, I live in Anchorage Alaska, keeping an eye on those Russians with Mrs. Palin, so shipping is a factor worthy of consideration...some manufacturers are kinder to AK than others...

Thanks in advance.

Out of the speakers you listed I like the Ascend's myself....I have not heard the EMP's but I see a few people on here that have them and like them.I know the Primus can be modded a bit to sound very nice as some folks on here have done. There are alot of choices and being in Alaska I am sure shipping is going to be cool if you buy from a US based company.....

If you can afford it, I'd get the SVS and Ascend offerings sent to your house and mail back the loser. That's obviously a chunk of change, though...

For what it's worth, most of the comparisons I saw online were between the CMT-340SEs and the step-up SVS line (MTS-01) rather than the STSs. I'd bet on the Ascends (but my bias is probably fairly obvious). :D

Thanks Soprage and Jamie 2112 for your feedback. Unfortunately, given shipping charges, I will have to take the plunge sight unseen.

I am leaning most toward the Ascends, which is aided by their (relatively) cheap shipping vs. $400 charges from other companies.

At the risk of highjacking my own link, Soprage, do you find that you NEED that Emotiva amplifier for a 5.1 system? I was looking at a yamaha receiver of comparable wattage (650) and was told by apparently informed others that it would be adequate power the system 5.1 without an amp, although I worry if it is enough for the dual 15 epik empire. Your thoughts?

I'd look at used, especially considering the shipping situation. I've only bought one pair of speakers used but I plan to continue to do so in the future. Most used speakers are essentially good as new, not much to wear or break, and you can get a lot for your money.

I would think Anchorage is big enough you should be able to find some pretty good options over the course of a month or two by watching craigslist. If you were in Juneau I could sell you some Infinity Intermezzos or b&w 602s3s :)

If you do go new though, I'm a big ascend fan. I have the htms in my computer room and Ive heard the 340s and the Sierras, they're all good stuff, and if the shipping is cheaper that's even better.

Nicolas, I would consider the Intermezzos if you will consider shipping.

Your original list is a good one. The only brand I've really heard, for speakers from that list, are Ascends, and I also think they are an excellent value.

Ascends are typically easier to drive, though the Sierras might enjoy more power according to some. In either case, after the briefest of browsing around, I would opt for something besides the 565. Is it true there are no preouts? I also just read some consumer mini's saying that the power is probably downgraded from past generations, that it feels light, and the power supply looks small.

I think if you get a beefier receiver, you will be just fine. If you go with a less powerful receiver, I recommend having preouts just in case. You can always add a 3ch amp later if you feel the need, as I'm guessing most midlevel receivers will power your surrounds just fine (as you are 80% HT too).

If you've already decided on your speakers, ask in the amps subforum. You pretty much HAVE to choose your speakers before deciding how much power you even need (they can vary so much in impedance, sensitivity, difficulty of phase angles, or whatever else those crazy EE's like to talk about).

Your room isn't that big, but I concur with others, that a little beefier receiver would be better. Even the Yammie 665 is rated using only 1KHz vs. the full range. The Denon 790 is 90W 20Hz-20Khz. The Denon also has better bass management for mismatched speakers. A less expensive option with similar specs/features would be the Onkyo 607.

Not to worry about the Empire, SPL balancing will take care of disparities.

Gents--thanks so much for all the advice and info. I bought the onkyo Tx-sr707 last night, which I think is better than the yamaha 565 I was considering, and I got a smoking deal on a refurb-499$ courtesy of another post on this site.

I have been scouring the local craigslist for nearly 2 months but am only finding pairs of towers or entire 5.1 systems not separable and/or a whole lot of junk...So, I am going with the Ascend Cmt's after your input and reading some more reviews. bombs away!

I wish I did as well with my first go at this stuff.
