Even though I have made my decision, settling with the Rockets 850. (I am beginning to think, I might be a little disappointed when it arrives). Still waiting for them to be shipped. Got delay until Feb. 08.

I still read a lot in speaker forums. I like crisp, clear, and in front of your face sound but without the "Tiring effect" like the Kliscph. Remember the beginning of a movie when that "THX" comes on and all you hear is that crisp, clean sound? Yep, that's what I love. Do you think the Rockets will disappoint?

Out of all the speakers on my list, my research points that maybe Rockets may be the most "laid-back" out of my lists: Swans, BIC, Aperions, and Axioms. May be too laid back for my own tastes. But I still believe I might still like them enough to keep them. I guess if not, I can always resell them.

Since owning my Onkyo 805, I have been using my "white van" speakers and I noticed that my comfort level volume is at (-"negative" 15). LOL. With that said, maybe the Rocket was too much for the money if I listen to that low?

So they don't have a 30-day return policy?
The Rocket's do have a 30-day return policy. I think he may consider selling them to avoid the return shipping if he doesn't like them.

Hmm, I hate those Free Shipping One-Way policies!
Outlaw Audio is the same way. They tell you it's "Free Shipping". But then if you return the item, it's $50 down the drain.

Does anyone else have Free Shipping BOTH WAYS like Aperion Audio?
That's gotta be the best deal on the planet! Free Shipping both ways, even if you don't like their speakers.

Hey Calnbs,
I can understand how you feel. I haven't gotten my 850's yet either. They are scheduled to arrive the 3rd week in January. I think you should definitely try them out for the 30-days and make sure you have everything callibrated right before you make a decision. I myself have high hopes for the 850's. I tried out some Axiom's but I thought the sound was a tad harsh at times and tended to over-emphasize the high frequencies. Also, the Rocket's are suppose to have excellent off-axis response, a weakness of the Axioms. Don't get me wrong, I think Axiom makes some great speakers, but they just didn't work in my listening environment. In the end, only you can decide what sound you prefer. :)

That should be a basic requirement for all ID brands. How else can they make up for the lack of opportunity to audition their products before buying them?

Yeah, the shipping is a bummer, but it's probably worth the cost to find the speakers that work the best for you. I really like the ID companies so I can try them out in my home. Going to the dealer to do some listening is fine, but it just isn't the same as hearing them in your own house.

And I would be 100% more interested in trying out speakers if they are 100% free both-way shipping. If they are so confident in their products, they should have no worries about people returning them very often.

I believe NuForce is another company that actually lets you try out their speakers, amps, pre-amps, and pre-pros for just $1 w/ free shipping both ways. $1 is a lot better than $50 or $100 shipping back!

And with my local HT stores (Magnolia & Ultimate Electronics), if you don't like the speakers, you have 30-days to return to the stores at no charge.

That's great if you have that option. I say go for it. But not everyone has that option. There are some areas where it's difficult to find a good dealer, without driving for several hours. In that case, going the ID route may be a good option.

Because of my location I rather audition at a store, then find the best deal on the internet from an authorized reseller; then give the local store a chance to give me his very best price, and from that take a decision on where to buy. For example, auditioned PSB Image locally, as well as Monitor Audio Silver, and many others (lucky to have a dealer for almost every well known brand within 30 mile radius from my home, now there is a Best Buy opening in February, and a Circuit City opening later this month), and was split between PSB Image (T55/C40/B15) or Monitor (RS6, CSR, and SFX). Went ahead and ordered Monitor at full list ($2,100.00), price for PSB Image system was $1,995.00. The MA dealer had the system in stock, the PSB dealer didn't and I would have had to wait 2-3 weeks. Then, by chance I found www.saturdayaudio.com, who refused to sell or even price MA to Puerto Rico, unless it was a clearance item, protecting the local dealer, but they would sell PSB. After checking their PSB pricing I decided on T45/C40/B15 (getting B25 for the same price, as they ran out of B15). Including freight I saved $600.00 over local pricing, plus I air freighted them getting them in 5 days, not 3 weeks.

In another forum someone from Salk Sound, I believe it was John Salk himself, was vigorously defending ID's. He had very good arguments, but when I told him that usually they didn't know a thing about shipping, that they only paid freight to the user but not back if they don't like them, that they lacked international sales knowledge (including AK, HI, APO/FPO, US Territories) and heavily relied on the domestic (48 States) market, and in their case the website was very difficult to get sales information; he never answered back. Actually their website is very poor for an ID company who's main business is internet sales. The best one I have seen so far is Axiom, their pricing changes automatically based on your location to include freight to your location, even international, plus they cover the freight back if you don't like the product. I believe Aperion or Ascend does this also.

In other words, ID companies are not for everyone. For example, the lack of stock from AV123 was a turndown for me, when I was ready to purchase from them in November. Same thing with ED, A3-300 not in stock plus I had to buy at that moment and wait until available, because pricing was going up Jan. 1st. They also quoted $450.00 freight to PR, when I can have it in PR for $85.00; in their defense they did offer for me to sell at a special price (FOB their warehouse), and for me to arrange for shipping.

ID's are not for everyone. Some offer good products, but lack after sales service. But, if like Soundman says, you are in a small city/town, or an isolated area they are a good source, just make sure you are reading their freight terms, and that you read what customers have to say about them.

Very good point. It really depends on the company you are dealing with. Both Axiom and AV123, in my experience, have given excellent customer service, before, during and after the sale. In defense of AV123, i will say that the reason for the shortage of inventory is because of their recent sale, selling at below cost!!!! I was able to save over 50% off this way. To me this is worth the wait. This was done to make room in their warehouses for some new product lines they are introducing. As far as shipping goes, it is more expensive. They send their large speakers via yellow freight. Their speakers are heavy and that's why they are sent that way. I actually got quotes from UPS and the shipping charge was not much different. Their speakers are just heavy. Delivery is important and with yellow freight, they will not deliver untill they call you and schedule a delivery time with you. They will even help you bring it inside and unpack it for you. Anyway, the point in my telling that story is b/c it is important that you feel comfortable with the company you are dealing with. If you don't have any dealers nearby, they are great to work with.

You can audition the Rocket RS250 MKII

Quote from AV123--RISK FREE TRIAL!
Worried you won’t love the speakers unless you have the chance to hear them first? No problem! Order a pair of RS250MkII speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don’t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping! (UPS GROUND only) This means the demo is no risk to you!

This way you can get an idea of the Rocket sound before purchasing. Also on the AV123 forum there are members all over the place willing to let you audition in their homes.

Uhh -15 volume level on a receiver like the 805 is pretty damn loud. That's close to reference level so if your speakers sound low at that volume there is definitely something wrong with them. Don't compare "white van" to something like the Rockets. Hell don't compare white van to anything, well maybe bose.

I wasn't comparing anything!!!!! While waiting for my Rockets to show up in Feb.08, I am currently using my "white van" speakers in the mean time. With just the white van speakers, it is already loud, with that aside, it must be INSANE when the Rockets come, using the Rockets with the same volume scale as I used it on my white van speakers. All am saying is that buying the Rockets might be "OVER-BUYING" for me. But that is not a real concern....my concern was, I hope the Rockets will not be too warm for my taste because I prefer clean, crisp sound without overbearing.

Yes, there is a 30 day return. My shipping was qouted at $320 without subs so I better love it cuz I am not spending another $300+ to ship it back.

Actually I do, I spent around 2 years and almost over 1,000 hours reading before buying. But without hearing it first hand, I am not sure if it meets my taste since many reviews believe that the Rockets tend to be warm or netrual. I tend to like my sound clean and crisp. Just second guessing, may be the Swans, Axioms or other more forward speaker might be a better fit for me.

YES, I own a pair of white van speakers I bought many years ago and currently being powered by my Onkyo 805. Are these the best speakers ever? No....its doable until the Rockets comes in.

From what your stating your preference to sound is. I think your going to like the Rockets.

Also it's not how loud a speaker plays. If you want loud purchase Cerwin Vega's. Yes the Rockets can get loud, but it's the detail that you will hear that should get your WOW factor going.

I know when you see the shipping crated your going to say, "Holy Sh!t".

warm or netrual. clean and crisp.
If your meaning to Clean and Crisp is a speaker who's tweeter is forward, or described as bright. Then the Rockets are not that. They are neutral. Midrange was very smooth. Detail and clarity are excellent.
