The basic idea is a guy gets ratted out for drug dealing and the movie follows him on his last night a free man. For having an impressive cast, and the potential to be an interesting story, it lacks momentum. Where Spike Lee's charisma comes out in select bits, they only remind you how slow the rest of the movie is. A lot of the 'energy' is spent on things that seem to have little to do with the story, and what we are set up to actually care about.
Another gripe was the picture. The movie is shot in 2.35:1 35mm, and seemed way too wide for the movie. This movie just didn't need it. Where 2.35:1 makes sense to me is great battles, with lots of people and action, great cityscapes, and so forth. This movie was mostly dialog, and the wide lenses just meant they could fit the whole 'class' in a frame, but it didn't add anything. No immersion. Also, the picture quality was very rough, maybe for style?
