I'm looking at a budget sub that is supposed to go 20-200Hz but at 180W am I going to get any force behind that low bass?

The SVS PB10 NSD is about the lowest cost sub ($429) that goes down to 20 Hz. SVS, HSU and AVS-123 all make subwoofers that go down to 20 Hz and below for reasonable costs.

A budget sub costing less than the PB10 NSD probably isn't going to produce usefull frequency response to 20 Hz and if it does it is going to have compromises such as low output and no headroom.

So that's where the 180W comes in? Well I don't really have it in my wallet to get anything that expensive. I'm trying to stay under $300 and since my speakers don't cost much more than $400 total; it doesn't really make sence to spend even that much. BTW the sub I'm talking about is the Sony SA-W3000... please keep all flaming to a minimum:D

Ever notice how even the cheapest, tiniest set of headphones has a 20-20k Hz response? Pretty much anything goes to 20Hz - within, say +/-70dB! Without a tolerance limit, the frequency range doesn't mean much. If you want real 20 Hz output, you have to pay.

Don't worry that your sub is better than your speakers! Do you never, ever in your entire life plan to get better speakers?

Sub response down to 20 Hz is not just about power, but more about design of the speaker and cabinet. Buying a 300 watt amplifier in a subwoofer doesn't mean it will go down to 20 Hz for example. If you have a limited budget you can still get a good subwoofer at HSU and AVS-123. The compromise made is you only get frequency response to about 25 Hz in your price range, but these companies publish real specifications for their subwoofers. You can study their subs and see how much you have to spend to get 20 Hz. Response to 25 Hz covers most music except deep notes of a pipe organ. Response below 25 Hz is mostly for dramatic special effects in movie soundtracks and special effects can go lower than 20 Hz.
