20 x 14 bedroom 5.1, DefTec vs. Aperion

I've narrowed it down between Aperion 5T L/R main and 4C center plus sub (probably Aperion) vs. DefTech7006, CLR2002 (but may have to do ProCenter1000 due to height), no sub. Let's assume some generic rear speakers. Which system? I'm worried about the 7006 and room placement (how far from each other and walls). Are bipolars always going to outperform directs? Is this system too much for this room size. Thanks.

Def Tech BP7006: I think you need at least 24" from the back and 24" from the sides.

Generally, bipolars are more difficult to place than monopolars, but I've heard the Aperion can also be more difficult than some other monopolars. The good thing about Aperion is that they give you a true FREE in-home audition (free shipping both ways). So you can always try out the Aperions and return them if you don't like. I would just audition the front L/R main first. If they sound great, then audition the Center. Then the Sub & Surrounds. I would not order the whole system all at once because that's a lot of shipping packages if I didn't even like the main L+R.

You can also get the BP7006 from a local store like Best Buy and do an in-home comparison. Then return them if you don't like.

eh, if your going with the 5T's, I would recomend that you at least go with the 5 series center channel. For movies, most of your sound comes out of the center channel so I wouldn't skimp on it. It will also sound great with the 5t's. I'd be afirad that the 5T's would easily out power the 4C center and it won't sound as great or smooth.

Again if you can, I'd at least go up to the 5 series center channel. But as AcuDefTech said, you can get the 4C center to see what it sounds like, and if you think the 5T's are overpowering it, send it back with the free shipping and get the 5C in there.

I can't comment on the Def Techs since I don't know too much or listend to them really

I'm pretty sure I heard an example of mains overpowering center yesterday. The guy at BB set up a pair of DefTec 7006 with a Mythos 7 vs. 2300 center with the 7006's. It really gave me an appreciation for the center channel. As expected, there was a huge difference between the two set ups. When it was dialogue only, the difference wasn't that notice but with dialogue plus music or a sudden shift to music, there was a huge difference.

Take those BP7006s & the CLR2300 for a test drive in your own home. They let you try out and return if you don't like in 30 days, right?

Obviously I'm crazy about my Def Tech speakers, but they are apparently not for everyone.

So how did you like the in-store audition?

What is it about Def Tech that makes some of us go crazy over?

To me, Def Tech is kind of like the Lexus of automobiles.

If I had the money, I would own every single new Lexus and every single new Def Tech.

Shoot, and I wish Lexus would put Def Tech speakers in their automobiles. Yeah, baby, Mark Levinson audio + Def Tech speakers.

I definitely second this assessment. if you look at the physical dimensions of the 4C vs. 5C, there is a HUGE difference. I've got the 5 and my dad has the 4 and there's no comparison. The 4 sounds great for what it is and is fantastic if you're space limited, but Aperion's 5-series mains will overwhelm it. It's not too much more money to upgrade - just make sure you've got the space for it!

I wouldn't worry about the 7006s overpowering the room. I have a pair each of BP10s and BP8s in a 10' sq. room and it sounds great.

I liked it, I liked it alot! I took the suggestions of the people and articles of this site and took my own music and some movie with soft spoken female dialogue. I also selected a current version of the mid-range Yamaha receiver I'm getting from JR (663). And, I took the remotes so I could control the volume.

The sales rep was initially very proud of himself but he changed his tune when I told him there was no sound coming from one of the 7006's. All in all, he was very understanding, helping and not hard selling.

I called DefTech today to ask them about the Mythos 7 and the 7006s. They weren't wild about the combo and recommended the 2300 as a center. They thought the 2500 and 3000 would be too much. They also said the Mythos 3 center would be a nice match. I'm going the demo the 3/7006 combo as space is tight in front of the display.

The Mythos 3 Center speaker would be good because it has the 4.5" midranges and 1" tweeters just like the BP7006s.

I'm sure you will love the either the Mythos 3 or CLR2300.

The hardest part was the BP7006s because they are bipolars and are usually hard to place. The mythos and CLR are direct-front radiating/monopolars. They are great sounding regardless of placement.

I can see it already---you and the BP7006s sitting at home.

Gave the new Aperion 5 series another look trying to save a few hundos. Bad news, no shippments until at least 4/14. I'm thinking the new 5T's and the 5C for the center. But man, thats a LONG time to wait, makes me wonder about a speaker company that runs out of speakers. Not a warm, fuzzy feeling.

So, I switched back into DefTech mode despite the price and the fact that I would buy at BB. I tell the wife about them. She's not happy about the individual power cords or the placement vs. walls, etc. She wants maximum future flexibility (i.e, what if we move them to an area with no outlet nearby).

So, I'm now back open for speaker selections! Let the games begin.

I bought the 633's and some 533's because they (aperion) is redoing pretty much their whole line up, hence the delays.

They're in the garage awaiting a move and then I hope to get them up and enjoy them..
