Nice post, Hemlock! It's the Thread That Will Not Die!:D
I agree and I'm glad it's still alive. I read all of the new post with great anticipation.

Update!

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute: I'm only selecting this album because I haven't heard the new one, but don't worry, its amazing. There's 3 songs that extend past 10 minutes, and they contain a lot of silent parts, with weird sounds/noises. I personally skip these parts because I lack the equipment to enjoy them (Acid). Even with these spots though, the songs are amazing, and the style of their music is like nothing I've ever heard.

I recommend a listen, but don't buy a disk if you're not sure. Comb Myspace or DL a couple tracks.

Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon: This band is easily one of my Favorites. I didn't really like "Hot Damn", they're previous album, but GP is way up on my list. They classify themselves as Southern Rock, and hot damn, do they rock. Fast passed with driving guitar riffs that compliment the vocals quite nicely. Speaking of vocals, they're a mix of Screaming and Singing, and IMO, very tastefully executed.

Notable tracks include: 1.)Apocalypse Now and Then, 2.) Kill the Music 5.) Tusk and Temper, 6.) The New Black 11.)Pretty Dirty.

Peeping Tom - Peeping Tom: Another favorite I found through a friend. I know very little about this band except that It's Tom Patton with many different artists (Every track features a different artist). Its again, a different sound that I've never heard before, but I really enjoy driving to it. They have a Myspace page, just search Peeping tom. Ever if you don't like it, it's worth it to hear Norah Jones say the eff word.

Notable tracks include: 2.) Mojo, 3.) Don't Even trip 5.) Your Neighborhood Spaceman, 10.) Sucker (Features Norah Jones).

And because I'm impatient, I'll write out her lyrics for the song.

*It's boink, boink every minute sucker, sucker
so keep it in your pants, boy sucker, sucker
what makes you think your my only, lover
the truth kinda hurts don't it mother, ****er?*

Ah, priceless.

Pendulum - Hold Your Color: I posted these guys in another thread, but they deserve more publicity. These guys are a Trance/House band from the UK. They play on the radio all time and do sessions. Hold your Color appears to be a CD they made (Don't quote me on this). Either way, it's a great CD, and sounds fantastic. Has many styles of tracks, including R&B, to angry style techno.

Notable track include: 4.) Fasten Your Seatbelt, 7.) Girl in the Fire, 8.) Tarantula, 9.) Out There, 10.) Hold Your Color 11.) The Terminal, 13.) Another Planet.

Thanks guys, I "read" all the 11 pages before me because I could tell right away that this was not a "I have more obscure taste than you do" contest.
I've seen this thread scountless times where people try to out indie or out Jazz the other person by throwing in Bands that they probably don;t even listen to. the extensive explanations of most peoples lists is the giveaway that they actually listen to and love this stuff.

personally I'm gonna seek out:
Mars Volta
The Porcupines
and Tom Waits (I have his single Long Way Home  )

Try, circa 1974, Santana (think their live album recorded in Japan that's full of trippy space-rock), Mahavishnu Orchestra and Van Der Graaf Generator!

Awesome! I've been listening to them in the car lately, and I lent my CD to a friend. You never know how much you'll miss something until you don't have it

On the other hand, if you do have it because you like the cover, your manhood may also be called into question!:p

Jim Hall: Concierto

I've been dabbling in Jazz for years, but usually don't get too excited about it. This SACD is an exception, has Chet Baker, Paul Desmond, Steve Gadd, and Roland Hanna on it and makes you understand why these guys are Jazz legends. The title cut is a mesmerizing lazy afternoon listen.

Steve Gadd IMO one jazz's premier drummer, his solo in Steely Dan's AJA (title cut)was surreal.

There has been some great stuff mentioned so far. In the interests of keeping it to albums I own but other people should own (IMHO) and probably don't, here are some things slightly off the beaten track, all of which are absolute delights for me. I never tire of listening to these:

Soft Machine: Bundles - Alan Holdsworth gets his big break.
Dukes of Stratosphear: Chips from the Chocolate Fireball - XTC's tribute album to psychedelia that surpasses most of it.
Zia Mohiuddin Dagar: Raga Yaman/Raga Shuddha Todi - a master of the vina takes two 70 minute excursions to outer and inner space that will change your alpha waves.
Herbie Mann: Live at the Village Gate - a wonderfully melodic afro-jazz session with three long tunes, two of them Gershwin's.
Eliza Carthy: Angels & Cigarettes. Heals the heart -just listen.
Henry Mancini: Music from Peter Gunn - surprisingly good jazz from the man who made so many great film scores. A young John Williams (the conductor/composer) plays piano on this 1958 session.
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Live at Carnegie Hall: a great concert, and the best and most musical drum solo ever played (by Joe Morello).
Jimmy Smith: Organ Grinder's Swing - with Kenny Burrell and Grady Tate. Swinging organ trio jazz. It doesn't get any better.
Bobby Hutcherson: Happenings - the great Blue Note jazz vibist with pals including Herbie Hancock.
Richard Thompson: Watching the Dark - 3 CD historical collection with some live cuts. Amazing.
Shatki: A Handful of Beauty - John Mclaughlin's well-before-it's-time Indian/jazz fusion band with L. Shankar. Stunningly good.
Gong: You - listen to the pothead pixies...
Fairport Convention: Liege and Leaf - Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and the rest in the early days of Brit folk-rock.
Joe Henderson: The Inner Urge. Blue Note saxophonist plays a powerful storm.
Big John Patton: Got a Good Thing Goin' - Patton lays down a great jazz organ groove with Grant Green on guitar.
Jade Warrior: Elements - The Island Anthology Four LPs on 2 CDs.
Planxty: Words and Music - Irish music that is sheer perfection, with a Dylan tune thrown in.
The Corries: Live at the Royal Lyceum - Scottish folk music, sung and played by Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson, with a variety of instruments; their version of The Great Silkie played with the combolins is the best ever.
Marta Sebestyn: Kismet or Apocrypha - a Transylvanian folk singer with a voice of silver moves out into the traditional folk/fusion world.
Sarah Vaughn: No Count Sarah - Sarah sings with members of the Count Basie Orchestra. One of her best.
Bonus 21st choice: XTC Oranges and Lemons - songs that won't stop playing in my head for days.

I know I'll be thinking of the important ones I missed tomorrow. Haven't really touched on classical, vintage rock or much world music.

Slide Guitar Nirvana

The Derek Trucks Band "SONGLINES" is a must.:)
If you like slide guitar, Derek Trucks is special.
He has his own band, and is a member of the Allman Brothers Band.
He's been touring with such no names as Eric Clapton on his world tour.
I highly recommend this!
