2 x HSU STF-2 vs. 1 VTF-2 MK5

Would like to get feedback from members on what the best choice would be. I have attached image of my living area (19x13x9, but MLP is couch). I currently own a single STF-2 but wondering if picking up a used second SFT-2 or just upgrading outright to a new VTF-2 MK5 would be a better option. 70/30 movies to music.

Thanks in advance!

A 2nd STF-2 can get you a flatter frequency response but a VTF-2 mk5 is considerably more powerful. You just have to decide what you want more: more even response or more dynamic range and deeper extension.

@shadyJ , thanks for your response! So I am clear, by more dynamic range, are you implying that due to the deeper extension? Or does the VTF-2 also play more upper frequencies?

Seriously, I have no life.

Well, you usually cross over to the sub around 80Hz and all should do that well.
But will let shady respond further. ;)

Dynamic range is more about its ability to generate higher SPL.

+1 to the above replies. Dynamic range is just louder, extension is just deeper. The upper frequency extension of the VTF-2 is good as well, if you need it to be, it can play up to 200 Hz, but I wouldn't recommend using more than a 100 Hz crossover frequency except in a few circumstances.

@shadyJ understood. Do you think for a room of my size the HSU VTF-2 MK5 would be overkill? With my solo SFT-2 my volume knob is at 10 o'clock after being calibrated with Audyssey xt32 and REW with LFE setting on receiver at 0 db.

The volume knob doesn't tell us much unless we know about the gain structure of the system. The answer to the question of whether the VTF-2 is overkill can only be answered by yourself really. Do you want a subwoofer that digs deeper and gets louder than the STF-2? If so, maybe an upgrade is in order. But if you are happy with the STF-2, than maybe the VTF-2 would be overkill. It is a much more powerful subwoofer.

Turning subwoofers into a chair is overkill:

1 or 2 VTF2s? Not overkill.

Unless you sit on them.

:p

@shadyJ I'm pretty happy with the volume of the STF-2, but wouldn't mind if it went deeper for movies. As an alternative would the SVS PB-2000 be an apples to apples competitor to the HSU VTF-2 MK5? Any other sub recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

The PB-2000 would be a competitor to the VTF-2. Other competitors in this class is the Outlaw Audio Ultra-X12, Rythmik LV12F and LVX12, and Monoprice Monolith 12" THX Ultra.
