2 SVS PB10-NSD's vs. ?????

I can buy two SVS PB10's locally for about $500. I currently have a cheap Polk RMS6000 that I got with the set of Axioms (M22, QS4, VP150). I'm just getting this system up and running (first one) and you can definitely hear the Polk, but I'm sure it can and should be improved on.

Is this deal a real no-brainer, or just so-so? I see a lot of recommendations for using two lesser subs in place of one "better" one. I don't have a budget for a real expensive sub of any kind, so I'm wondering if getting these TWO would be markedly better than waiting for a good deal on something a bit pricier.

Room size is about 18 x 15 x 8. Yamaha RX-V663, PS3 and above-mentioned Axioms.

TIA for any input/opinions.

Best regards,
Stephen Porter

Sounds like a killer deal, if they are in good working order.

Buy them before he changes his mind. :D

I've never heard these models, but from everything I know, this is an excellent deal.

I have a killer sub, but if I did it all over again, I do wonder if I would have bought two lesser subs at the same total price. Not sure.

I'd go with "no-brainer".;)

Seriously, that's a great deal and a perfect match for your room with output to spare if you ever decide to move to a bigger house.

Yes that is an excellent deal, dual svs subs added to your setup will bring your system to a whole new level, for $500 that is a steal! Are you buying these from the same guy you bought your Axioms from?

Are you sure that these are the NSD model, not the ISD model? Probably won't change people's opinions that it's a great deal, but I wanted to ask. Thanks.

I don't necessarily agree with this statement. But your not looking at lesser subs. The SVS PB10-NSD's are "quality" inexpensive subwoofers.

No...different guy. I'm waiting to hear back--they may be gone already!

They are advertised as "NSD," about a year old and supposedly in "perfect working condition."

Knock on wood... I'd like to get them.

I sure hope you can get these. As said before, these are quality subs, just not expensive. Added to your present system, and it will be a killer first system! Good Luck.

Since you will be using 2 subs I recommend you invest in a unit like the Behringer DSP1124P to use in conjunction with REW (Room EQ Wizard) to properly integrate the subs into your system and get the most performance you can out of them.

I'm contemplating another sub and I've heard about the behringer, this is good advice.

To clear up the confusion, the NSD and ISD are identical in performance and specification. The NSD woofer is just the one that SVS built, not the ISD woofer from TC sounds. All the specs are the same.

BTW, get these.

Missed them! $#%@#$)

Someone got there before me--big surprise. Oh well, one of the results of being a newb and not just jumping on a great deal immediately. Thanks to all who provided feedback--I'll know better next time.

Now onto the next "treasure hunt"......

There is an SVS PC 20-39 PC Plus available for $200 (maybe a little less). The thing is, it was manufactured in 2002, so it's six years old. Seller represents it to be in "good working" condition, but out of commission for a year or so after being replaced by two JBL units. And to have only minor wear-and-tear. But before I jump in the car and drive 50 miles to check it out, I'd like some feedback on whether there have been significant design/mfg. changes to this particular model over those years--it seems logical that there would have been. I don't want to spend $800-1000 on a new sub at this point, but I would definitely like to the $800-1000 performance for $200 and get a decent sub to replace my Polk RM6000 HTIB that came with the Axiom speakers.

Since missing out on the pair of PB-10's, I've read a lot of threads here and at AVS forum and most of the SVS website. It seems that SVS is definitely one of the top and most-respected brands out there, so I'm keeping a particularly watchful eye out for them.

TIA.

Stephen,

Arggg! Sorry to hear that. That's great news for whoever got them, but it sucks for you. However, more opportunities will come along.

If that sub is in good shape, then I'd say get it at $200. There are others on the forum that know more about the details and history of the SVS cylinders, but I'll give some details to get you started tonight. You can view some of the earliest info on the PC-Plus line at this link from SVS (start at the bottom and work your way up). The PC-Plus line started in 2002. Since then, I know of two changes. First, SVS developed their own woofer (the 12.3) and put it into the design in 2006. Second, from what I've seen on this forum, the PC-Plus amps now include a single-band parametric equilizer - though not shown in the SVS pictures, a member here (Bluesmoke) put up pictures that showed it.

I don't have a feel for how much better the 12.3 woofer is than the original version. I can say that the PEQ came in handy on my PC13-Ultra. However, that said - are those two items worth an extra $700+shipping? Not to me! Again, if that sub is in good shape, I'd get it. I'd say that it's worth the drive to check it out. I just hope that you get good gas mileage. ;) If you can get the seller to send you photos of the sub first, that would be nice. That way you could see if there's any obvious damage that would keep you from wanting to make the drive.

Adam

EDIT: BTW, you can buy the 12.3 woofer from SVS for $169. So, even if you really want that woofer, it would still be cheaper to get this sub and upgrade.

EDIT 2: You can view details about the 12.3 woofer and it's debut at the normal SVS news link here. Just scroll down to the April 14, 2006 entry.

Thanks Adam. Just got word that this one is SOLD too! I guess a real bargain doesn't last long in this hobby.

I wrote to SVS asking about what changes occurred between 2002 and now and here's what I received back (on the weekend, no less!):

Customer Service Associate at SVS:

Thanks for contacting SVS, and for the kind words! Extreme value is indeed what we pride ourselves on.

You are correct about the improvements…it's a running process here and 6 years is a long time. :) The PC-Plus has a new amplifier (1-piece…the older had a 2-piece platform) and has gone through a couple driver revisions/upgrades in that time. In fact, a complete overhaul for the Plus line is imminent, with a pre-order for the new models beginning in a week or two.

Having said that, we're proud of and stand behind anything we've ever built. That sub will still be a great performer if in good shape. Any chance for a local audition?

At least I'm zeroing in what I really want. When the new Plus series arrives there might be a quite a few of the older models showing up as people upgrade!

:) They're definitely at the top of my list of search terms as I go sub-hunting!
Why haven't you bought these things yet? You know your time is running out now that you've made this awesome deal public. :D
