2 smaller subs over 1 big?

So I am initially in the planning stage of a smaller space home theater. I had these plans to go with a big Klipsch RP setup, with 2 SVS subs, but really I'm just not sure the space warrants the size I wanted to go. The room is about 11x17. Just an extra room in the basement.

I have decided on B&W 603 Anniversary Edition for L/R. HTM6 for center, and the 607 Anniversary edition for the surround. I got the opportunity to listen to these, and I really, really liked them. I'm in Alaska, so listening options are limited. I am planning on putting in ceiling speakers, but that's for a later date, because, well, I don't know what's in the ceiling yet. Will come after the renovations at the house are finished and I can get in there myself.

I bought 2 SVS PB 1000 Pros, but i'm afraid its just flat overkill for the room. I had the guy I bought them from come to the house recently, and he thought 1 would be plenty... Hmm, but I want 2 subs, audio dude. Lol.

I was thinking about 2 of the smaller Def Tech subs, or perhaps a B&W sub setup. It's less about volume and pressure for me, more about balance. I don't think 2 subs will have much issue in a room of that size. I would like HSU, but they are not an option due to shipping costs. Locallly, SVS, Def Tech, are available. Crutchfield is a reasonable option too, as they will put it on a truck in Seattle for me.

Any thoughts?

Just use the two SVS PB-1000 Pro subs. It is overkill, but the Deftech subs are junkers and the B&W subs could have any type of performance that might be a really big step down from the PB-100 Pro. In fact, it probably is. The SVS PB-1000 Pro is a known quantity and is very good for the price. The same can't be said of any of your other options.

Totally agree with shady. I’m normally a one big sub and add another later guy, but you already have two quality subs. They’re not big per se but are qualitatively better than your other options.

I would argue to stick with the two SVS subs. You have them. They work well. And two is not overkill for your room. It's not about getting louder or hitting one frequency well. It's about a good response for each listening position. Your room will have a null somewhere in the low frequency range. And this is why you want that 2nd sub, to be in another area where it will cover that null, and the other sub covers it's null, etc. The point is that the two subs give the listening positions good response in each spot, despite having nulls in different ranges that they cover each other for. That's the practical reality of why more subs are a benefit. Another benefit is running two gives you a nice net SPL and so they will achieve their output easier and have a bit of headroom for dynamics/transients.

You're good to go!

Very best,

I would not buy a Def Tech sub for any reason under any circumstance. Much, much better value out there.
I had Def Tech subs before I knew better and quite frankly was stupid.

The new 1000 pro is larger , it’s definitely not overkill they aren’t super powerful like jtr .. or larger sub brands . I’m still mad I didn’t go 18” for diy , 15” was same price ... sad I picked wrong size
