2 or 3 yr old model search.

Many of you on the forum have suggested that it may be better to get a receiver that is 2 - 3 model numbers older as the price of them is 1/3 - 1/2. While some of the newer featers may be lacking. I think this would be a good option.

So, I am looking for a Onkyo 805 or 875. But I was wondering if any of you know whether or not to get the 876 as it may compare closer to the 805 rather than get the 875 as it would not have a warranty at all.

I currently have the Onkyo 702 AVR. So, I don't have many of the features that these would have.

Or, would it be better to get one of the newer models, at the same price point. The main reason I like the 875 & 805 is they can handle speakers at 4 ohms. I read it in thier specs.

Or, if there are other models that would be similliar to the above, please let me know as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

^ I agree, the price is fair.

* But I would ask the seller (Mark), which version is the Main Loader on his 875. It has to be 1.01 or higher. Anything lower, and you'll be stuck with no upgrade possibility.
Also, ask him if the HDMI video is the latest firmware, should be version 1.8 or higher. If it's a very low version, the HQV Reon video processor is faultif, and needs to be updated.

Those two points are very important, concerning the 875.
The 875 is not without it's faults.
They can be circumvent somehow, but it's important to be able to do the firmware updates, and it's not for the faint of heart for sure.

Good luck,
Bob

The title of the thread startled me for a sec......:D I was getting ready to call pedophile....:D:D:D .If you don't care about all the newest bells and whistles then an older model is a great thing to get as far as price goes. www.audiogon.com is also a great place to get used AVR's.........

I guess I should pick the title better LOL. So, the older model needs some checking.

Would it be better if I can get a refurb 876 for ~ $200 more from Acc 4 less.

YES. A big YES too. It is $879.99 right now, and it's a much better receiver than it's predecessor. I'm glad that you came to that conclusion on your own.
I was just waiting for that. :)

* I also like what Jamie brought to the table. Some very cool stuff from Audiogon. :)
Hi Jamie, how's things man? Feeling the Blues yet?
Hope you're happy every day of your life man.

Blues up, :)

There's been some good deals on what was top of the line receivers a few years/models ago as people feel the urge/necessity to 'upgrade to hdmi'

Case in point there have been about 7 Marantz SR8500 in the last 4-6 weeks that have went for $330 to $400

I happened to get one of the last ones of these.:D

I just found a couple 805s ~ $500. One was a refub, another was used. Woudl these be a better deal or to get the 807 ~ $1k. any thoughts?

Also, does anyone know how to check the firmware versions on the 805 to ensure that it has been or can be update?

What is the procedure to verify that the firmware is the correct version or version that can be updated?
Their is a dedicated thread for firmware and software updates over at another forum. AVS under amps and receivers. Very detailed procedures and how to do it depending on models. It will also tell you how to check which firmware you have and what is the latest available. Hope this helps.

Check FW Onkyo TX-SR805

For thoses who want to know, here is the procedure to check the main loader version:

Unplug the 805
While pressing and holding the ENTER button, re-plug the power cable (You may want to have another person handy to help, depending upon the setup)
Once plugged in, release the ENTER button.
The unit automatically switches to Main Update mode and will display the current loader version. You can then exit the Update mode by pressing the STANDBY button.

To check the main firmware version:

To check the MAIN FIRMWARE version, turn the unit on; press and hold the DISPLAY button; press the STANDBY button; release both buttons. The current Main Firmware will be indicated on the display.

Well got an refurb off e-bay. I guess Bing is still doing their double cash back, so I also got 10% back as well. I'm excited to get to a newer receiver.
