I have head the B&W 803s to be suitable for orchestras and classic's. whats your take on it? I know they are priced way up, but would a second hand be worth the price for 3500? just a thought? I havent auditioned them yet.

They are fantastic speakers for classical music. In fact, even the 804S are very good at it.

Since the OP has a $5000 budget why is everyone recommending speakers that are less than $3k? He already stated that he is going with a pro amp so cheapest speaker should be in the $4k range. Plus since he doesn't care about buying used his money can be a lot better spent.
Money doesn't always constitute better sound quality.

IMO you should research a pair of B&W 803D's over the 803S's.

i think mazer meant 802D's

now, i would personally give up subwoofers in a music setup if i can get a pair of those (not because they have enough bass, but they're the perfect looking speakers IMO)

they have an "i'm an audiophile" look to them :D

Price is the issue, i found a pair of 803S for $3500 a year old. 803D's i guess sell over 5k for used i believe. but if i can get a used pair of 803D's under 4K its something to think about. But first i will go and audition the dyna's, Usher, Dali helicon's and the B&W's. i hope the local dealer might carry them. 802D .... some day perhaps

Sounds fun, scorpious. All of my advanced education is in classical music performance, and I chose Martin Logan Summits after a ton of auditioning. They are selling used for half off right now, at about 5.4k-5.6k. In different finishes too. They are definitely taller than 4ft, but they look different enough to warrant showing the C.O.

They retail at least around 11k, with 5% discount limit from authorized sellers. Each speaker has two 10" alum woofers, each powered by their own 200w ICE amp. The panel needs to be powered, and I do so with an integrated.

They do present some compromises, big time. They need/want space from the front boundary, with treatments, and the sweetspot is very small. But that sweetspot is amazing. Just an idea, and I know its over-budget.

Otherwise, I am a fan of Dyn speakers as well. You should pretty easily find the Contour line within budget, if the Confidence is too much. Love those as well. As much as i liked the BW 804s, I think I prefer the Contours. The 804s had a pretty easily detectable voicing in the higher register, but the "timbre" at least was very consistent throughout the range, at least when using string quartet or solo piano material on them. I was very close to buying those as well. Visited multiple BW stores on multiple occasions. edit: the 804s also exhibited a bit of sibilance that I dont remember with the Contours, and on the MLs its virtually nonexistent.

The MLs are not as consistent, timbrally, throughout the range due to hybrid design, but anything within the vocal range is incredible, as are quiet pianissimo transients in general.

Have fun!

i don't see why people focus too much time, energy, and money into their preamp. really, the most important tool in your system is the speakers. you can spend $900,000 on a solid gold preamp and have it paired up to some crappy speakers and it will still sound like hell.

dude, match your amps and preamps around your speakers. go listen to what sounds good to you, then go from there. when you find the spekers you like come back and holler at us. good luck
and on that note, there's that big pink elephant in the room: treatments.

im also now a big fan of room correction, such as Audyssey XT.

even if w/o the above, researching both listener positioning and speaker positioning will reap benefits.

I spent more on my 2-ch treatments than on my 2-ch integrated. Nevermind separates!

itsnt it a bit tricky to setup 2ch speaker with Sub's using a 2ch Amp?

any self-respecting sub (outside of DIY) will have its own bass mgmt/xover. So, run speaker wire (high level) to the sub, and it will xover for you, most likely with variable phase, continuously variable xover point, and slope settings as well. Run speaker wire output from sub to respective speakers.

OTOH, there are a few stereo receivers with bass mgmt, but the subs are usually more flexible. Actually, I'll go ahead and say ALWAYS more flexible.

it might also be worth it to buy an old model brand new high level AV receiver just for it's bass management.

wmax uses a yamaha rx-v2700/2600 just as a prepro. i used denons myself.

but yeah, basically ... any good sub will have fixed high pass crossovers but variable low pass crossovers.

now thats connecting speakers in series, am I right? so that would increase the impedence of the setup. how would that affect the performance?

Get 803S version and take the savings and get a Behringer DCX2496. This will do FAR more to increase your sound quality as compared to getting the diamond tweeter. The DCX allows you to customize baffle step correction, treble upper response tilt, bass signature/tightness and allows you to add dual subwoofers with perfect integration as a seamless extension later on if you ever so choose. With a speaker as well designed as the 803, it will really allow you to get just about any signature you want from your speakers. When speakers have higher coloration/poorer design, then such customized response is not as succesfully executed/achieved.

Chris,

After looking at the specification for Behringer DCX2496 Ultradrive Pro Digital Crossover, what place between a Amp/PreAm does it take. i looked at the inputs for DCX2496 and they are balanced XLR 3 inputs. and 6 outputs.
so I still need a Amp and a PreAmp for the DXX to work
