2 Channel and Sub

I've been lurking around for a few days and have finally decided to post. I am in the market for an affordable stereo/sub setup. This system would be used 100% for music--between my wife and I, everything from Jazz to Rock to Classical.

I have been looking at the Cadence X-Sub and Paradigm Titan/Axiom M3ti bookshelves. However, I have seen varying responses on the Acoustech lines. Just as a side note, my HTS is compiled of Klipsh Reference Series components and I am a huge Klipsch fan.

Welcome to the forum (or at least your first post).

I'm a little confused. If your HTS system is compiled of the Klipsch Reference Series (an awesome setup), then why deviate? The Reference is every bit as good as the Acoustech towers and sub, but the Reference series will most likely have more bass if you go with the RF 35's for the mains. IMO, those will have enough bass, that you won't need the Cadence XSUB.

Most 2 channel guys will tell you not to bother with a sub, and with those RF 35's, there's no need (unless it's a budget issue, then I'd recommend the Acoustechs).

If you go with the Paradigm or Axiom's, you'll need 2-3X the power to achieve the same output as the Acoustechs or Klipsch Reference. There's no substitute for horns. They are the most efficient driver on the market in reproducing the mid-high to high end frequencies.

Sorry Skinner-I'm just not too familiar with the systems you're contemplating. What is your total speaker budget for the office/den? Nice monitors and a small, crisp sub would seem to be the way to go, IMHO.

Bryan...by the way, how many wpc are you pushing in the den?

80-100 watts per channel depending on which receiver I use (I have an older pioneer and a newer Kenwood in the closet) I was thinking the same thing...nice satellites and a good sub. I'm looking to spend no more than 400-500 for speakers, including the sub. I know thats low so I was hoping someone could give me their personal views on the BIC's, Axioms, or Titan's. Thanks. B

Ive read in other threads that the BIC bookshelves and a cadence sub are a great match. Should be more than enough for a second system and stay below your budget.

Does anyone have personal experience with the BIC's? Should I got with the 62Si's or the smaller 52si model? Also, can anyone explain the Ed Frias mod to me?

With such a low budget, I think you should consider skipping the sub and buying better speakers for the full amount. Depending on your tastes, you may find the Magnepan MMG just the thing (though they cost $550, are 4 ohms [which may or may not be a problem depending on your receivers], and they are floorstanding speakers). And if Magnepan is not to your liking, I still think you should consider higher quality bookshelf speakers over dividing your budget between a sub and bookshelf speakers.

I own the BIC DV62 speakers. They're very good for the price. I would not recommend the DV52s, as they have much less bass response, and a cheaper, smaller tweeter. As far as the mod goes, it helps reduce the brightness that these speakers have. You may like the brightness, as you are a Klipsch fan.

But ah yes, the Magnepan MMG speakers. They'll be excellent with music, though you would need a hefty integrated amp to drive them.

I think that they sound really great, the bass is definetly enough. That package comes with the base/bass stand the bookshelfs and the onix cd player.

You'll want the DV62si's. I've got a pair from 1989 that still sound excellent. The larger tweeter (as opposed to the DV52's) coupled with the larger 6.5" woofer make for a great all around speaker.

I don't know of any inexpenisve receiver that will handle a 4 ohm load. You could pick up a used piece or a vintage receiver, and that will have no problem with the Maggies.
