Really need an answer to this quandary.

I had a 'home theater in a box' from Sony that crapped out on me repeatedly - finally went out and bought a new Yamaha receiver, thinking that I could use the great sounding sony speakers with the new receiver. However, my new Yamaha HTR-6160 amp says the minimum ohms it can handle is 6 (with a setting selected) , and the speakers I planned to use are 2.7 ohms.

What will happen if I connect these speakers to the new recvr?

Does anybody know of a proper home theater receiver that I can use with the 2.7 ohm Sony speakers?

get new speakers instead of a new receiver:D Usally Sony HTIB has a minimal avr in terms of amp power,, and while the yamaha should be able to drive the sony speakers, it would be an upgrade in speakers that would really pay off for you(if budget permits).

How did you detrimine they are 2.7 ohm speakers?

Do they say that, or did you measure them with a VOM?

If you measured that, that's not the impedance. That's the DC resistance,

Even though they are both stated in ohms, there is a difference. Impedance is more frequencty related and is moreso calculated from several other figures than measured with a meter.

But in either case, I'd guesstimate their impedance is more like four ohms, which is still asking for trouble with that, and many other, receivers.

I've never heard of speakers being rated at 2.7 ohms... ???
