I am looking for the best deal right now for a 2.1 speaker and sub combo that hooks up right to the back of the pc. Anywhere from $150 to $300.

Somewhat cheaper than that, but here goes anyway:

You've probably noticed how companies often invest more on a specific model which is meant to win the hearts and minds of people. Also, the successor to that model often falls short in comparison.

I believe Logitech did just that with this model:

Logitech S200 2.1 PC system

I had a chance to compare this to a lot of other cheap, active, desktop speakers and these were notably better all else being the same. I don’t know whether it’s a better XO, or a better tuned port (which is quite deep and wide for the box as you can see in the image),but this simply played better. Perhaps they went with a cheaper XO later to cut down cost... I really don’t know. Later on, I wanted to buy these for a present to all my friends who needed something similar, but they stopped making these and the successor Z200 simply wasn’t as good. I still have mine.

This is not a true 2.1, meaning that it's not a sub. .1 gets the whole signal, but plays mostly mids (they do go lower than one might expect),and 2 play highs. It would be a mistake to expect real lows from this.

The Logitech Z623 on Amazon is 99 dollars and THX certified I promise it's beastly for a 2.1 system. I used it for my projector home theater until I purchased a full 5.1 system your won't be let down in that price range
