If you're looking for horn loaded and efficient speakers I wonder why we aren't looking at Klipsch's Reference Series bookshelf speakers? Generally I find the Reference series Klipsch to be fairly smooth sounding for a horn loaded speaker. They're highly efficient and play quite loud.

I've done a lot of research on Klipsch and it seems like they set the standard awhile back for quality audio but as of recent, other companies have stepped up and provided good competition. The one thing that turned me away from going with that company was reading reviews regarding harsh highs and ear fatigue. I think the 340s will be perfect for what I'm looking for. If not, I'll report back and try something else.

I would like to interject a small thought on Klipsch. Published specs and opinions will only guide you so far. Your ears are the best gauge for YOU. I had the same assumptions about Klipsch until I demo'd a few pair. You need to get into their better (pricier) lines to get their best sound IMO, but I did not think they were harsh or bright. They are forward, meaning they tend to project the sound from the tweeter. There is a difference. Some find this desirable, some do not.

This may be taken as contradictory, but, +1 to the Ascends.
