1st Reciever :) Pioneer VSX519 sound with HDMI only from LCD ? Or Optical Cable ??

I have recently bought my first reciever. I have it hooked up to a Samsung 52B750 LCD tv. I know it hasnt got audio over HDMI, but i think it has HMDI repeating. I have a HMDI from the reciever to the TV, and i i am trying to play the TV sound from Digital broadcast through the reciever and out to the speakers. Is it possible to do this with only the HDMi cable and without a optical cable ? Or do i always need a optical cable to carry sound ? Thanks. Sound does not seem to come through with only the HDMI cable. I also have a older DVD player and hooked up straight to LCD via rca video cable and RGB component cables for video.

If this is true, didn't you already answer your own question?

If it is indeed true, then yes, you will need some other connection for audio, whether optical/coax, mch analogs, rca stereo, etc.

Thanks for the reply. This Pioneer Model is meant to have HDMI repeater, so does this mean i only need HDMI single cable from DVD or Blue ray player to carry the audio and video ? Pioneer sites says only 1 HDMI cable is needed to carry audio and video, i assumed this meant it could carry the audio and video from the LCD tv and through to the the reciever and out the speakers.

Not from the tv to the avr, the other way around.
