19hz low freq extension for 400 bucks

So they claim... Frequency response isn't everything with a sub and it is not disclosed at what levels that measurement was taken. It could be ruler flat at 75dB and go into massive compression at higher SPLs.

That's why we do reviews.

Hey Mike C, I already put that one in the deals section. One of the guys on the site has one ordered and is going to post his opinion on it. I haven't heard this sub but Sheep was saying it's pretty similar to the Energy 12.3 sub, and that one I have heard. Pretty darn good sub and the fact that they are similar is due to the fact that Energy and Mirage are owned by the same parent company. There are a few reviews of this sub online, all that I saw were favourable. One that I read had this sub doing OK against an HSU VTF-3. The HSU was supposed to be better, but for $400 the Mirage seems like a great deal. Good company to be in as I've heard that sub too and it can shake the whole house.

The 19Hz isn't a lie. These subs actually hit their quoted response figures.

Theres a review of the Energy S12.3 on the Energy site, and with in room gain, it hit 15Hz about 5dB's down from its 100Hz reading.

Its a good sub, and a good deal. They sell for 1000 up here.

For the same price why not get the SVS PB-10 ISD.

-5dB is about a 40% reduction in output, but the fact that it still has output that low is pretty impressive. My PB-10 was about -6dB at 16Hz, but it has a subsonic filter at 18Hz I believe.

Correct. It becomes painfully obvious when looking at ground plain and anechoic graphs.

My DIY sub hits 16hz at high SPL (don't have an SPL meter) for less than $300. :)

What was the spl level of the Energy at 100Hz?

Tom Nousaine reviewed it in the Sep/Oct 2004 issue of Sound & Vision. There is nothing recorded for the 16Hz bar, nothing. At 20Hz, it was 85.9 dB spl. Not so hot. But, it did 113 dB spl at 32Hz. :D I would say, that is a considerable drop at 20Hz.

Yep, there are measurements, like ANSI Lumens,;) Then there are real measurements like actual fL on screen after ISF calibration:D
Subs are no different. Thanks for all your hard work and keep reviewing.

Yeah, I ordered the Omni S12--It arrived yesterday, I hooked it up tonight and am currently going through the recommended break-in period (50 hours...WTF?? ) I'll post up with comments...

Mirage is certainly no "white van" outfit. I have no idea if they can meet that spec anechoically, but I suspect that's probably a pretty decent little sub.

Break in is a bunch of crap. See HERE for a very detailed explanation.

I just ordered this sub from Vann's a few days ago, should have it by next weekend. Anyway, I was hoping the S10 was going to be in stock again as I had heard this at the dealer that I bought my speakers from and it sounded great (I didn't buy it from them as they were still selling it at retail). After Vann's took it off of their website I decided to go with the S12. I will post a review as soon as I get this in.

Read the review on the Energy site. It was an In-room measurement. I suspect Tom did not do it in room.

BTW, I can't find that article anywhere. Can you give me a link?

Thats where the try to trick unknowers. Wow,20Hz. Well what good is it if you cant play it loud enough to use it.

Where would tom measure it if not in his home? That is where he tests all the portable stuff.

I checked S&V on line, but that article is not there. The issue is there though with selected articles only.

Perhaps that Energy site used a higher than 10% distortion? I think Tom knows how to measure them right.

I don't know. It would depend on the room size and whatnot. I guess we will never know. BUT, I have heard the whole S.3 line of subwoofers, and they are very impressive. The S10.3 outperformed the Velodyne DLS5000R.

There are other things to consider about subwoofers, like how 'fast' they are. There is a technical word for this but I can't remember what it is.

For films, I would argue that subs acting like boom boxes are fine, so subjective reviews are probably more useful than technical data.

Frequency response data must be more useful if quoted at a certain SPL (e.g. 95 dB, 19 Hz-120 Hz +/- 3dB).
