I suppose you can buy 2 screens,

1) Fixed 1.77:1
2) Electric or Pull-down 1.85:1

Keep the 1.85:1 screen closed unless you need it.

Think simple

The thing about front projection is that if you decide to go 16x9, The image is still so big that it wont bother you as much. Unlike watching 1.85.1 on a small 16x9 tv where the bars take up a third of the picture.

I had the same question as you a while back and i still have not yet purchased the screen for our cinema, we're using a sheet right now and i do enjoy 16x9 movies because the screen is just that much bigger but I really dont feel like i would be loosing anything by not getting a 1.85 screen.

There are also screens that mask off the areas not being projected upon so that whatever size format video your watching it always fills the whole screen, But you'll probbably rather just live with bars than pay the extra.

.
The black bar % must be the same whether you watch it on a front projection or a small TV.
You have a 1.77 ration(16x9) or 1.85, very small difference.
On a 100"x54" (1.85) screen, you have a 1" loss top and bottom instead of being 100x56".

A 37" tv is about 18"x32". A 1.85 format on that screen would give you about a 3/8" black bars on top and bottom. on a smaller screen yet, they would be even smaller black bars and not possible to take up 1/3 of the picture.

Or, I am not interpreting your sentence here.

well im not saying that it takes off less of the picture, I mean that since the picture is already so big its not as much of an annoyance. With a 110" screen (like we have) the black bars dont take as much away from the movie as they do on my 50" plasma.

Haoleb, you may be thinking of the 2.35 aspect ratio. As mytr said, the 1.77 to 1.85 is a small difference no matter what screen size your using.

Aha! your right. I looked though my dvd collection and found only one 1.85:1 disc. This entire time I was thinking 2.35:1

I dont know why anyone would want a 1.85:1 screen vs 16x9 When I was saying before How I sort of had the same question i was thinking 2.35 vs 16x9 since in that case there is a big difference.

The black bars are not a problem on an LCD monitor. Are they that big a problem on a projection screen?

Check and see how many DVDs you have that is 1.77(16x9) vs 1.85 and higher.
While I have an older screen, 1.85, I don't think I have any 1.77 movies, or at most only a few and loosing that 1" off the top and bottom is meaningless. Certainly not getting a 16x9 just for the few such moves. Now the 1.85 have no black bars and the black bar on a 2.35 movie is 1" less:D

I only have a few movies, and all are 2.35 except that one. I also watch alot of 16x9 HD programming so 1.77 screen would make sense vs 1.85 and 90% of the movies we rent are 2.35. Seems like only the really cheesy or kids movies they put out in enhanced 16x9 type formats. At least at our local blockbuster.

In that case, your answer is solved, 1.77 screen :D
