looking to spend $1500 or less on a new reciever. i am leaning toward the VSX-84TXSi, but wanted to make sure that's the way to go. i am somewhat new to this and am currently putting together a whole home theater. so i don't have the speakers yet either, but that's another issue. also not sure if there is something new coming out soon (with all the announcements at CES) that i should wait for either. any help/suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

New HT

Phish,
You might consider deciding on the entire HT budget and selecting the speakers first, because they are the most important component in the Audio chain. Then you can pick a receiver that is capable of driving them and has the features you need.

In your receiver price range, Yamaha, Denon, and Pioneer are good options.

I too was searching for a receiver of this type and ended up getting an 84 and am very happy with it after a few weeks with it.

Set up is great and the amp as well as the pre amp sections work great

I would do it again for sure

Definately get the speakers first. Or, as mentioned, decide the total budget. Speakers should get the highest percentage of the budget.

ok i didn't post about the speakers simply because i haven't done much research on them yet and well i figured this was the forum for receivers, not speakers. but i am planning on spending up to 3,000 on the speakers. so a total of $4500 for the speakers/receiver. right now i have the 42 westinghouse 1080p lcd, but will be getting a projector/screen. we are building a house and i am setting up a little home theater in the basement. however the house won't be done for awhile, so i figured, i could get the speakers and receiver now and get the projector/screen when we move in. i am thinking the 33%/67% ratio was a good split on the budget. anyways if you guys have suggestions on speakers those are welcome too.

Your budget sounds right in line. You should be able to find a Yamaha RX-V2700 within your budget.

For speakers, I would recommend B&W 600 series, along with a sv sub. A nice system can be had for 3k.

Another option in the 3k range, and I consider a better value, would be Monitor Audio silver series along with an sv sub.

I love my Elite VSX-54 which is an older version of the 82. I wanted the step up, but couldn't swing it. Pioneer doesn't get a lot of press on the forums around here, but I am very pleased.
