12v trigger solution

I have an Onkyo tx-nr807 that I would like to add an amplifier to however the Onkyo only has triggers for the 2nd and 3rd zones. I was wondering what my best option would be to provide a 12v trigger. My kids and wife would also need to turn them on also so it would have to be pretty much fool proof. I was wondering what surge strips or power conditioners had 12v triggers or delayed turn ons. I have to buy one anyway I've run out of outlets. Thanks Greg

Most power conditioners have delayed turn on for at least one bank and that should work, but there was another thread that I can't find now that someone posted a plug strip that also worked this way for a lot less than the typical conditioner. If you need a lot of outlets, a conditioner or more "advanced" home theater style plug strip might be the way to go.

You could also consider an amp that has signal sense turn on, though I definitely prefer 12V trigger.

Was kind of looking at some used amps. Either a hk signature 2.1 or b&K av5000.

when i had my onkyo, i used fans on my zone 2 trigger. So what i would do (i trained my gf on this) turn zone 2 on first, then turn the reciever on. Now i use my belkin PF60 that has 12v triggers on banks for my fans, and my anthem 12v trigger turn my amp on. Also my monster power strip has 12v trigger also.

What is the exact model number of your Onkyo?

If it has a plug on the back, you can use a 12v power supply plugged into it.

If you use cable TV, then you can use that if it is turned on/off and plug in a 12v power supply to that.

There may be other options, but please let us know the exact model number as different Onkyo units have different connections on the back which may offer some usable function.

I have the 809 and I just used the 2nd zone 12V triggers to turn my amplifier off and on. It requires that you press the zone 2 button and then the power button. If I were you I would hook it up this way, but just leave the amplifier on all the time and only turn it off if you have to. I have nothing to base what I'm about to post on but I don't believe leaving your amplifier on all the time damages it any more than cycling it on and off all of the time and any increases in the electric bill are negligible.

Many amplifiers take far more than "negligible" amounts of power on idle, potentially over 100 watts. Even if it's just 50 watts that's ~36 kWh a month

Here is what I would recommend for a 'cheap' fix. It is not a no-cost fix, but will do what you want:
Amazon.com: Belkin Conserve Socket with Energy Saving Outlet: Electronics

Plug a 12v power supply into the amplifier, and into the above power strip, and when the receiver (or TV) is turned on, it will turn on the 12v power supply and turn your amp on.

A sub $30 solution for a poorly designed A/V receiver. I can't believe the 12v trigger can't be reassigned.

I used an Emotiva trigger expansion module plugged into the switched power outlet on the rear of my old 906 and that worked well but I don't remember a switch being on the x07 series. Now that I have the 809 I have the module plugged into a RF remote switch like this example. When power goes to the trigger it sends the turn on signal and the amps power up, and when power is cut to the trigger my amps go into standby mode.

I just ordered a Belkin conserve strip to power down the sub in my wife's office ( no trigger on the receiver)
i will report back on whether it works or not.
cheers, Mac
