12" driver options?

I plan on another diy sub after this is fixed, is it wise to build a different sub to go along with the one I have? or should they be the same? I was thinking that the css i have after it is fixed will be only able to go to 30hz or so, so I was thinking the next build could be a better design that will go lower to cover what the css is missing? open to any ideas for another sub if that is an option, looking to keep the sub and amp at $500 or less.

Since you have a better "problem" by having a slight larger cabinet than desired, would it make sense to add some extra bracing in the corners that simply consumes some of the volume of the cabinet?

This is a PRed sub so reverse engineering it is even harder than a standard ported sub.

so what about the other question I had? another thing, what if i sealed the 12" hole for the current driver, and used the 15" hole for a new driver, making it a sealed cabinet?

here is a few shots of the cabinet

An SI 15 would probably work in the 3.6 sealed cuft box. I'll need to run a sim to verify.

In my models with the Trio 12 I would say that 500 watts is simply too much power for that woofer and I agree with lsiberian that it is much too big an enclosure. It does best with around 300 watts rms. Reduce the volume first and foremost, then look to lower power as needed, but you will probably be fine in simply reducing the volume available. The woofer itself is relatively decent when used in the correct enclosure size. If CSS recommended that enclosure I would be curious as to why.

As for drivers, there are so many options out there depending upon your price point. I know that I am leaning towards giving a pair of 12" Pierce Audio Products a spin in a dual opposed configuration at some point in the near future.

The Dayton Ultimax 12" also looks interesting though the enclosure recommendations/models are a bit high.

Then again the brand new JL Audio 12W6v3 looks really nice in a 3.5ft^3 enclosure at 21hz tuning even if it is a bit pricey. Their motor & suspension linearity combined with ultra low power compression make them great options/performers too.

I can vouch for the PAP drivers. I built a sealed 18" sub using the 1K driver and the thing rocks. I can dump about as much power as a bridged Crown XLS2500 can push to it and it doesn't even flinch. Really excellent drivers in my limited experience. Plus Paul is great to work with, usually quick to answer any questions, and won't leave you hanging if you have any problems.

Bob from CSS is sending out the parts to modify my amp to 30hz, we are hoping the driver is still ok, if it is, I will be keeping it in the system, and would like to build a different one that will fill in the lower stuff that the Trio can't

So what about a sealed HT SI 15" sealed box, as the second sub, is it the right thing to have 2 different subs in one system?

I prefer having the same sub, but there are those that mix subs with success. You'd need to get an eq like the minidsp and measure in room response using all the subs in question. In that case I'd suggest you use an aggressive low tune on the 2nd sub. I can probably come up with a balanced low tune, but it's likely to be a bigger box than you may really want. And you'll need to be careful not to over drive the 2nd sub.

I would like to have the second sub to be very close in size to the one i have, as not to look out of place in the room, the current one has outside dimensions of 20"x20"

Bob is sending a new modified amp, instead of parts to fix the one I have, so there is no chance I screw it up,lol. still crossing our fingers the driver is OK

Got the new amp, and that has cured the bottoming issue, do not notice the loss of db below 30hz much, sub works great even when pushing it hard now.

I'm not surprised generally 12" drivers do best with a higher cut-off. Glad it worked for you.

This sub will be for sale soon. I need 2 bigger ones to fill the room, thinking maybe 2 15,s would like to go the diy route again, only with something that works. lol
