11channel mixer as 7.1 surround sound receiver?

Hey guys was just wondering if you could give me your thoughts on an idea of mine.
I was just wondering if I could run the RCA audio outputs of an optical audio decoder or a HDMI splitter (like this one) http://cgi.ebay.com/HDMI-7-1-5-1-Surround-Sound-Optical-Audio-Decoder-/230467590710?pt=Home_Theater_in_a_Box&hash=item35a8f05a36 straight into an amplifier or to an 11 channel mixer. Could I use a system like this instead of a 5.1 surround receiver? I only want to do this as I already possess a few different high end DJ amps and an 11 channel mixer

any advice would be helpful. Jesse

I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work perfectly in your situation, assuming that you have external amps driving your speakers, seems it extracts the audio from HDMI converts it to analog and you send it to your mixer and out to the outboard amps which drive your speakers. You can easily adjust gain per channel on your mixer. Only 2 things I can think of would be the ability to adjust delay for each channel, so each speaker channel is arriving at the same time as well as the sub... As well as xover point.... can you adjust your LFE channel to crossover to your speakers with the mixer...? I am not hugely familiar with how much adjustments you have with the mixer.....

OK i see what i need now, no my mixer dose not have adjustable delay for each channel or for crossover points. Could i buy some sort of active crossover with built in channel delay or do i have to look at getting a different mixer with all those things built in. do you know of any mixers that would have all these features?

You would need a digital mixer and I would think the cheapest for what you are wanting to do is going to be around 10k..........used

Just get a receiver with pre-outs and use that as a pre-amp.

He wanted a mixer with eq and delay capability to go to his crossovers.(not going to happen),but hey you can always do what you want and waste your time and money.Or you can build a kit first and get to know what you are doing a bit.You cannot just get crossovers and speakers and pair them up.I would seriously suggest crawling before all out sprinting...........just sayin

We've said this several times hopefully at some point he'll take the advice.

well i think im finally starting to give up on the idea of making my own receiver.
what brand receiver would you guys recommend, keeping in mind i only want to give me my 7.1 channel to run into my mixer then amps.
On a side not what makes up a receiver and why is it so impossible to recreate.
