I hate to tell you this, but that is Rogers and there over-compression on every other channel besides the one that no one watches for more the 10 mins [preview channel]. It has nothing to do with the quality of your TV.

Some shows look great on Rogers, while most have macroblocking and mosquito noise all through them.

The best way for you to test it is to order an HD pay-per-view movie, those are suppose to be the very least compressed movies they offer. It should look awesome.

Or you can wait 6 months for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to come out...

Hi Maxx,

I'm very disappointed on the Rogers box. Do you think I should call Rogers to come and look at my cable connection to see it's put out the original 1080i. Maxx I'm very relived as of now it's not my XSRD 50" TV. I paid fortune for the TV. I red lots of reviews on HDTV's and this one came on the top for me and for the future needs 1080P?. Right now I uses a pan S77S DVD player which has 1080i up converter. It's not bad at all. And I also have a HP 3500 serge box as well. Maxx Rogers told me not to use the Monsters HDMI cable as Rogers not supporting the signal yet. Do you think I should use the Monster components cable in the future. And also do you think I made a good investment on this TV or should have gone with a plasma TV. Please let me know.

Thanks Maxx and happy holidays.

1. I think you made an excellent choice in TV, I own the 60'' SXRD and love it.
I have it paired with the Pioneer Elite DV79-AVi DVD player which also has an excellent scaler and does 1080i and the SA8300HD PVR. I love this combo. DVD's look awesome and HD looks great. Some better than others with HD.

2. I would call rogers and have them come out to make sure everything is O.k with your setup. It should not be blurry on HD at all but you will notice macroblocking and mosquito noise more often then not.

3. I use the Monster HDMI from the PVR to the SXRD and it works perfect, I dont know if Rogers has it enabled in your area though.

4. Monster products are great quality and I have my entire system wired with their THX Ultra 1000 series cables. The problem is they are extremely expensive and I will tell you that I got all of my cables for 60% off through a friend. There are many cables out there to choose from and I would not have paid there retail price.

I hope this helps and happy holidays to you aswell!

Mileage varies but I say drop that provider and get DirecTV HD. I have their HD DVR and I love it. Content looks good on the HD channels always with no over compression that I have noticed.

As to the other statements in this forum, you are right on about "watching TV" being secondary. I have a Samsung 6168 1080p DLP and I love it. Not just for DiscoveryHD (and personally I cannot get enough of DHD) but mainly for watching movies. Combined with my S97 DVD player, I get a great picture (once tweaked a little).

A great alternative to Monster is Belkin PureAV. Can be found here pretty cheap.

Also, this is a good place to get quality cables cheap.

I have looked at several "1080p" sets and I have to tell you, at such small screen sizes compared to front projection, I could not tell that it was any higher resolution than the "720p" sets.

I really do not think anyone has anything to gain from buying a "1080p" set unless the display is closer to 100"+ at this time. Its going to take a lot higher quality programming to make a real difference at this juncture in the HD revolution.

If all my programming looked as good as ESPN HD football at 720p, I would be a very happy camper. Forget that movie crap they call HD. My 480p DVD player looks better.

What I really want is some minimum standards set for SD and HD programming bandwidth. Not this compressed garbage they call SD and HD now (with a few programming exceptions in HD).

Standards change!... its more important that you can enjoy the music, movies, and TV that you want to watch. Most of what I will be watching in the next 12 months will be 480p DVD's (yes I have a lot of them)... sometime next year when there's HD stuff available that I want to watch I expect to get an HD PVR (720P/1080i). I don't see when Blue-ray or HD-DVD will be mainstream (or more importantly affordable), certainly not next year. Your choice should reflect what is available and allows you to use enjoy the investment now
You have a lot of 480p DVD's? Funny, since they're 480i unless I missed something.

Paramount and 20th Century Fox already have 30+ titles ready to go, and many more on the way. It's only a matter of weeks, not 2007 as you say.

Funny - I spent about 3 hours researching this. DVDs are not 480i or 480p specifically, they are actually a combination of the two and it is disc encoding dependent on what is what. Reading the details of how it is done was kind of brain wracking, but finally made sense. It is all about the best quality for a series of frames in the least amount of space using crazy encoding algorythms. So, when all is said and done, some of the MPEG2 data is 480i and some is 480p.

Nice and confusing huh?

I apologize. I should have been more specific. None of these titles will be available in native 1080p, only 1080i or 720p for any foreseeable future.

Is a 1080p set that much better than a 720p set? If you take say a JVC 720p and a JVC 1080p and watch a recent DVD using a Oppo 791H upconverting player, how much difference will you see from say 12 feet? especially if you turn off the 1080p's iris?

If money were no object and I just had to have a display that was capable of accepting a native 1080p input signal and delivering it in the same resolution without "enhancement", It would have to be the Sony VPL-VW100 with a 120" screen.

??? Where did you get that information from?

I know that during initial production run testing, Sony used Charlies Angels mastered at 1080p. As well, the only definitive press report I've read indicates the Pioneer Blu-Ray player will output at 1080p.

A big push for Blu-Ray has been the inclusion of 1080p - this year.

Greetings,

I think I wrote those comments back in July 05 so my crystal ball was a little foggy. The earliest release for Blu-Ray is sometime in 2Q 06 here in the US from the reports I have been able to find. That could be close to a year if you push it to June.

I have been looking for confirmation that the titles listed for release by Paramount & 20th Century Fox in 2006 for Blu-ray disc titles will be in 1080p and I could not find any. If anyone has more information\confirmation, I would love to read about it.

I think progressive signals are poorly understood and how film transfer occurs from prerecorded films at 24pfs. Here is a link that I think will shed some light on the film industry, editing\mastering equipement, etc. but suffice it to say that it costs a lot of money to properly provide native 1080p material.

I hope this helps.

P.S. Bear in mind, this article is also a couple of months old.

I just want 1080p/24 - 1080p/60 sounds nice, but I am not nearly as pressed on that. Give me a display that can refresh properly at 24 fps and feed it 1920x1080 and have it display at full 1920x1080 and I'll be happy.

I was wondering if there were any 1080p clips/demos available anywhere. Would you mind posting where exactly you got the clips from. I think some sweet 1080p visualizations would be awesome for parties, like you mentioned.
I was specifically talking about WinAmp and the MilkDrop visualization at 1920x1080 resolution running to some good music. Wow. True 1080p resolution via the VGA port on my Sammy.
