Ya, how much do you wanna spend

Here is a link to one.

http://www.plasmavision.com/lcd_projector.htm

I don't know what your price range is, but as you can see this one isn't exactly cheap.

I'd do a google search and you shouldn't have any problems finding more. If you mention how much you want to spend, then you may get some more specific recommendations from people.

There are a lot of them out.
Here is a few that will handle 1080p. (budget from about 1,800.00 to 15K+)
I recommend the NEC HT1100 or the Sim2 Line.

NEC HT1100
NEC MT1065
Sony VPL-HS51
Sim2 HT280
Sim2 HT300 E
InFocus ScreenPlay 5000
InFocus ScreenPlay 5700
JVC DLA-SX21UH

A good place, as most will say is to go here.
http://www.projectorcentral.com/mfg.cfm

You will find most projector manufactures there but certainly not all of them.

LEVESQUE

JVC HD2K
Sony Qualia

Both are 3 chip LCOS projectors, 1080p. I've seen them both professionnally calibrated and they were better to my eyes then even the mighty Sony G90 (CRT).

The 5700 will accept the signal, but it cannot display it natively. It has a native resolution of 1024x576. High Definition video is either 1920x1080 or 1280x720, so the 5700 will have to scale the video it is receiving down before displaying it.

Thats funny that the 5000 is native 1280x720 and is 1,200.00 cheaper. Granted it is LCD over the DLP model. So you will loose some contrast.....

Don't know why you would pick the HT1100 over a solid 16:9 projector...

Anyway, the Sony Qualia is one of the best digital home theater projectors on the market right now. I would think that within 1-2 years we will really see 1080p technology take off as both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are likely to offer 1080/24p video on their discs and we should (finally) see the 1080p DLP chips hitting the streets.

Unless I was getting a solid 1080p projector like the Qualia, I wouldn't worry much about 1080p right now. If it is important, then I would wait 1-2 years for more technology to come out and prices to drop. I expect them well under $10K in 2 years.

UHH, forgot to state, I am a 4:3 buff. And my 120" screen is 4:3 format. So it would be my choice.......

4:3 buff, you watch alot of cable/sattelite tv on the projector? thats gotta be hell on bulb replacement with the extra hours

I still watch mostly 4:3, but do so on my regular TV. But, for people getting into home theater for the first time I would strongly encourage them to look into only 16:9 projectors and screens. Since 4:3 material will display smaller on a 16:9 screen AND it is almost always lower quality, you effectively reduce size and quality at the same time making a better watching experience.

But, when watching a good DVD (HD disc... someday) or HDTV the material fills up that 16:9 screen and can blow you away.

Recently AVS Forum has had a discussion about a company offerring relatively inexpensive manual and electric masking systems which seem like such a killer idea to me.

e73bass - Do some serious reading on Projector Central then consider why you specifically are looking for 1080p when (basically) nothing puts that out. 1080/24p is likely to be supported by HD discs, but with only a handful of LCD/LCoS projectors having 1080p and no DLP yet, it is a very weak market for 1080p right now. I am sticking with my entry level HT projector for at least another 2-3 years until I see what comes out in the 1080p format.

Good, cheap 720p projectors are readily available though - I would get one if I were building now and wanted a projector now.

No, actually I watch very little tv. A lot of my DVD's are 4:3 Including LOTR, Harry Potter, etc.... Obviously not all of them. But I try to get 4:3 when possible...

1080p

So is the NEC1100 or Sony VPL-HS51 a good projector to watch HDTV satellite-sports mostly (hockey, football) on and DVD and alot of X-boxing.
Also will the new HD-DVD support current DVD format or will I be replacing my 200+ current DVD's ?
Also thinking about the hitachi projector-PJTX100 --not 1080p--but still the same price as the NEC1100

Yes, this would be fine. Specially for sports from tv. Being sports will be 4:3 format. And all or most projectors can be switched to 16:9. But this particular projector is 4:3 native. I beleive NEC also sells a anormorphic lens. So it would be even more true to 16:9 But as stated, the projector will support and do a 16:9 format. You would just need to do some masking if wanted. Most of the time, with my 4:3 format-when watching 16:9 I usually do not mask. But it does help for the eye to perceive a brighter image when you do masking for the 16:9 format... IMO..

AVOID 4:3 - Here is my reasoning

1. HDTV should be available in your area and all HD broadcasts will be 16:9
2. Many sporting events are broadcast in HD
3. If you buy 4:3 then buy a screen, when you want to upgrade you have to switch out the projector and the screen again (I have a friend doing this right now)
4. Widescreen DVDs (like LOTR) preserve the cinematographers original vision for the movie and should always be considered over 4:3 versions. You get a more accurate video.
5. HD discs are a year away and will be very high quality optomized for 16:9 projectors.
6. A 4:3 projector with an anamorphic lens means that everytime you switch from 4:3 material to 16:9 material you are putting the lens on, then taking it back off. Not the worst thing in the world, but do you really want to do that?
7. 4:3 material on a 16:9 uses less of the screen. But, the only time you would have 4:3 material would be to watch regular TV or VCR tapes which are of lower quality. With a 4:3 screen the poor quality images would be BIG, then when watching HDTV or a good DVD the 16:9 image would be made smaller. That makes no sense at all. Go with a 16:9 screen then shrink stuff down to 4:3 when you go with poorer quality material.
8. There are masking systems available for about $500.00 that mounts over your 16:9 fixed screen to allow for 4:3 material to be properly bordered as well as 2.35:1 DVD movies (many DVDs are 2.35:1 which puts black borders above and below on a 16:9 screen).
9. The future is not 4:3, it is 16:9, do you want to buy into obsolesence?
10. Since most walls are wider then they are tall, a 16:9 screen will fit better and look more natural on your wall.
11. 16:9 is a format designed to be more natural for your eyes to view.
12. X-Box 360 & PS3 - All games will be widescreen HD.

There are a dozen reasons off the top of my head.

Now - WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?

It sounds like you really don't have much of any budget and are looking for a bargain basement projector, not one of the $10,000+ projectors but something more in the $2,000ish range.

At that range you have the one you mentioned (Hitachi) as well as the Sanyo Z3, Panasonic AE-700U, the Sony HS51, the InFocus SP5000 and a few others. You also are close to the entry level 720p DLP mark, so you may want to consider the Sharp Z2000 or one of the BenQ models.

Even less money (around $1K) are the 480p projectors which will handle all current ATSC resolutions including 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. These DLP projectors really look amazing with the InFocus SP4805 and the Optoma H31 coming in as standout models that you should seriously consider if you are really tight on your budget.

Have you looked at Projector Central's website yet? They are to projectors (almost) what this site is to audio gear.

Obviously this is your opinion. I will stick with obsolescence.

But really, obsolesence is a strong word. The dvd makers, know that everyone does not have a one track mind. I had said that I have both formats. The latest 2 dvd's out Million Dollar Baby & Constatine BOTH ARE AVAILABLE IN 4:3..........

I do not watch that much tv, but when I do its mainly sports. And as of now, I have never seen a sports show in 16:9. In HD yes, but not widescreen ever. Oh the bars with statistics may make it seem like widescreen, but they do go away. And these are in HDTV, same with some series on tv.

Forgot to add, I have about 100+ series discs, Dead Like Me, Smallville, Taken, Quantum Leap, Alias, Archives of War, Baseball (Ken Burns), Civil War (Ken Burns), Best of the Muppet Show, Century of Warfare, Dark Angel, Dukes of Hazzard, The Family Guy, The Simpsons, (a few Friends Seasons), The Hitchhiker, The Incredible Hulk (1978-1979), Kung Fu, Mork and Mindy, Roswell, Seinfeld, Shogun, Six Feet Under, Vietnam, The West (Ken Burns), World History of Organized Crime, etc...etc....

And about 98% of those are in Full Screen format. IMO, I would feel I would loose a lot of my screen by going 16:9 but less if I mask for 16:9

With my 120" screen, I get full screen at 120" and when I use it for 16:9 I end up using 110"

However, with 16:9 screen I would loose much more. For a 110" widescreen a full screen image drops to 90"

Sorry, but as stated above the dvd makers know there are 4:3 buffs. So 98%+ of the series discs will be in 4:3 and usually the decent movies are available in full screen format.

I could give a list of all the full screen dvd's I have. But that would take a long time. I do have Million Dollar Baby, and do plan on getting Constatine. Both in 4:3 full screen.

As I had stated above I do have both formats. And I am not trying to force my opinion on a person by saying that 16:9 is the only way to go, and that 4:3 is obsolite. If the person like either format, then I had given him a choice of both formats for the projector. But by knocking, a projector that has both lense available and telling him its not worth it. Well isn't that his choice....

Uhm, it would only allow for me to post 10,000 characters. The above is almost a quarter of the list. (probably more like 1/5)(because S and T are very long)

I believe it only got up to the D section.
Keeps going with Dukes of Hazzard Season 1 & 2 total of 12 discs. Etc.......

People are free to buy whatever they want, but movies aren't (typically) shot 4:3, and buying 4:3 discs is always an option. But, I believe that this year that widescreen HDTV sales are expected to be higher than 4:3 TV sales.

My opinion is not that 16:9 is the future.

16:9 is the future is a fact. 16:9, as of this year, will be the sales majority.

People can choose what they want, but I expect that people won't find 4:3 discs on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray Disc unless they were originally shot 4:3. So, shows like Smallville & Dead Like Me, which were originally filmed in HD glory, can be fully appreciated when they are released on HD discs.

Really, not arguing - just pointing out a dozen reasons that I consider important. So far, I haven't heard much other than you already own a bunch of 4:3 stuff and don't want to change. That's a good reason, but does it apply to someone looking to buy for the first time and may want to take advantage of current and future technologies?
