But I will say, I bought a $50 HDMI cable, and in 1080p my ps3 had white spots , like stars, during HD playback on my 42" LCD.

I upgraded to a $70 Rocketfish and the problem stopped....

Can someone explain why? Is it that I spent more? Or that the Rockeetfish brand is just better? It seems that spending more did improve performance in this case...

The cable connection on your other HMDI probably became loose you could more than likely could have achieved the same results bu reseating your first HDMI cable.

The other possibility is that paying $50 you possibly got a cheaper over price boxstore cable like Monster and the qualitity was actually inferior. There is a very,very low probability that this was the case, because wire-is-wire and you you can't change the Laws of Electricity.

Alway check connections first!

Back in the old days of RS-232 cables for mainframe telecommunications you used to "Pull" cables under the floor in the mainframe FEP to the modem racks. I had a guy who worked for me actually pulled so hard, he pull RS232 into two pieces

How long is the cable? The TV may be sensitive to signal strength? Most likely the latter is the case unless the cable is long.

It's hard to say based just on one sentence. It coulda been loose, poorly made, or just could have been a defective cable (it happens).

I've got a 50' HDMI cable I payed ~$35 for at Blue Jeans that's sent a 1080p signal from my PS3 without any issues at all. Higher prices don't always equate to higher quality, research before you buy.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong (nicely please ) but since its a digital cable, if the source gets the signal, every single one is the same. The source just can't kind of get it right? It either works perfectly or it doesnt work at all?

Not quite. The testing that I've seen shows instances where there is a signal at the other end but that it is not the original signal. There's more than one source for that, but why not link to an AH article? Here is one written by Clint last year. Check out the section on the first page entitled "Digital Is Digital, Right?"

There are a lot of cables that pass a perfect signal, especially at shorter lengths (three feet is quite short). Some degradation can occur over longer runs when trying to pass the higher bandwidth signals (high resolution, high color bit depth) on some cables.
