1000-2000 budget for audio, need advice

Figured this is as good a site as any for good advice.
I am looking to put together a surround sound system, i am thinking a 5.1 seeing as my budget is some what small. I just dont know what to look at.
I figure a HK AVR 147 receiver would be a good head unit. I am looking at paradigm speakers. Anyone have any good suggestions? Thinking i want 2 towers,center,2 surrounds i have a good sub from my existing system and all the cables. Or hey do you have a kickass system for sale?

1-2k will get you a good sub...

How big is your listening room, what do you want to do with this system, (music, movies?/?) do you mind slowly building up your system?

The current budget receiver that's generating good reviews is the Onkyo Tx-SR605 and can be had for around $400. Add a sub from SVS or HSU for anywhere from $200-$500, depending on your preference for bass. That will leave over $1000 to choose your speakers. You should go out and listen to speakers yourself to find the ones that sound good to your ears. Alternatively, you could take the recommendations of many here who like the internet brands, like AV123, Axiom, Ascend, etc.

edit: or do what Greg said and dump the whole budget on one really good subwoofer.

One possible recommendation:
SuperTower: DefTech 7004 ($1,200/pr)
Center & Surround L/R: DefTech StudioMonitor 350 ($200 ea)
Receiver: Onkyo 605 ($400)
Total = $2,200

Advantage: The BP7004 has a buil-in 300-watts RMS 10" subwoofer. Thus, by simply hooking up one speaker wire to each BP7004, you are BI-AMPING.
Your system will be a 5.2 HT since you will have two subwoofers. If your current subwoofer is better than the built-in sub of the BP7004, then you could use it too (5.3 HT), but for most people and most rooms you probably won't need more than the two subs in the BP7004s. You can hook up the LFE cable from the receiver to each of the BP7004 using a Y-Splitter.
