What universal remote do you like?

This is not a price-is-no-object question. What is a good 'reasonably' priced universal remote for a/v systems (tv, pre/pro, tuner,DVD players). Do you have to spend more than $200? Thanks for your info and opinion. PS, I have Rotel products with 'adequate' remotes but not great.

    Audiophilia and the Playstation 1

Good Stuff... While I'm at it... I've really enjoyed following these posts, especially between "jostenmeat" and "fmw". You guys share a wealth of experience and excellent perspective. I don't think I've read a better thread..... ...thanks

    Audiophilia and the Playstation 1

Actually, I was referencing recorded sound of them. I'm sure you're right...but I was keeping this in the reference of hearing recorded sound. I doubt very much if the average listener could tell if he/she was hearing a Steinway, Baldwin, or Bosendorfer.....I couldn't...but some people can...

    Audiophilia and the Playstation 1

Thanks, you're putting what I meant into better words. Point was, not was Steinway better than Balwin, but it takes experts to really hear some difference. Piano was not a good example since, as you correctly noted, there is the action involved. Most people would never know the difference...

    Audiophilia and the Playstation 1

Jostenmeat: I appreciate your comments regarding "listening experience". Disclaimer: I'm not a musician, but I was raised around a family rich in musical talent and from an infant heard a lot of excellent music played (rehearsed and performed) on a variety of acoustic instruments. I know...

Are upconverting DVD players worth the money?

Ditto on price...unless you're getting into the used market and finding some 1-2yr old products at 1/4 to 1/3 the price like I did. Another important issue is how the player may fit into your system. I started but never pulled the trigger on an oppo...then found the Denon 3910 used for a...

    Audiophilia and the Playstation 1

OK, I'm learning here. I take it that a DAC converts the digitally read signal into an ANALOG source for redirection to the cdp. It seems that since this analog recreation of the signal is absolutely everthing to the sound quality, it makes sense that a player with inferior DACs would sound a...

    CD vs. Hi-Res

...great stuff. and Mtrycrafts...so right. The multichannel business is driven by the movie industry. It's all about sound effects....car crashes, light swords, bullets whizzing, explosions, debris falling. Why one would spend hugh $$ on amplifiers and speakers for this is amazing. That said...

    CD vs. Hi-Res

Sadly, I think you are right....Let's hope there are enough of us around buying uncompressed good 2-channel AND multichannel stuff....as I listen to Chris Botti's Live DVD in 5.1. Ultimately, I hope that the musicians will prevail and dictate the quality of the output.

    CD vs. Hi-Res

Yes, I too, follow that old buzzard's remarks and am hard pressed to argue otherwise. He's saved me a lot of $$$ from chasing dragons in the hi-fi world. I want clean, accurate records and simple hi-performance playback products. What's so hard about that? Industry?...take note...we're not...

    CD vs. Hi-Res

Well, I won't go into the CD vs vinyl debate....but yes....the multi-channel experience in my humble opinion is better. But it's not really more ACCURATE when strictly comparing sound quality. I may listen to my old CD of Elton John's 'Tumbleweed Connection' and then put on the SACD version...

    CD vs. Hi-Res

How do we know that TrueHD 5.1 and uncompressed PCM .1 actually sounds better than previous hi-def formats? I can't find any direct comparisons. There is more DATA in the bitstreams and I suppose theoretically it should sound better but is it actually an audible difference? Until there is a...

audio limits of hearing vs audio formats

Here is an eye-opener from the Klipsch forum. I need a link to the full article...anybody have one? http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/4/974600/CDQuality.AES.png It's from the AES Journal (this month). Will this info rain on your parade if you're really into the hi-def audio...

    denon 3910 playback problem

Oh, yes, your're right...definitely not an analog issue which I use mostly anyway. It reared it's ugly head as I was trying to compare the Denons DAC (analog) to the Rotel's using the digital output of the Denon. thanks, Roger

    denon 3910 playback problem

When I use this univeral player for 2 channel and multi-channel analog play all is well. When I try to use the player's digital output (optical) to my Rotel RSP 1068 (pre/pro)...the 1068 takes a second to recognize the 44.1 hz signal...I see it's display change from 48 to 44.1 with a lag or...

Should I upgrade from my Denon DVD-2910?

I refreshed my memory looking over the archived threads related to Denon DVD players regarding audio playback. FWIW, most users and reviewers consider the 2900 (which you rate better than the Oppo) as better than the 2910. Then the 3910 comes in as a significant improvement over the 2900...

    Denon 3910 player output.

Yep...been doing that but the difference is so subtle. I'll be going thru a number of recordings to conclude anything. I'm just fishing for other's experience with Denon DAC vs. a good pre/pro (in my case Rotel) taking off the PCM output and converting it to analog . In your opinion, is the...

    Denon 3910 player output.

Right you are...and the SACD/DVD-A analog out put is simply outstanding from the Denon. Continuing to explore how to realize the best 2 channel from the same unit. Leaning slightly to the Denon analog out over the Rotel PCM conversion to analog. It's close. Other opinions on the Denon's DAC?
