    What's the deal with cables?

Mark; Welcome aboard. Spend some time in our Cable Info Center and you will see the comparisions and detailed analysis on cables that we have made. The bottom line is only poorly designed cables sound different. While measurable differences in good cables exist, it often takes drastic...

    Sitting through a hurricane...

We were on alert all day yesterday and had to evacuate our homes. Luckily we got nothing, not even rain! Unfortunately my bro wasn't so lucky and had 3 tress (2 over 100yrs old) ripped off his property and he now has no electricity. Today we are getting the aftermath with non stop rain...

    bi wiring question

Again there is nothing wrong with biwiring, but if you use a quality single wire to begin with there is no need for doing it other than to impress your friends :D

What's a good brand to buy for Component Cables?

I haven't heard of Pacific cables but I will have to check them out. My recommendations based on experience are : Bluejeans Cable AV Cable Impact Acoustics Cable All of these are affordable and snake oil free ;)

    Audio Cable Tester Requirement

Of course at frequencies where cable termination methods matter for speaker cables there is no amplifier gain available for it to become an issue, not to mention the brickwall filter in digital playback systems ensures signal attenuation greater that 100dB after 22kHz :)

    Denon AVR-5805

Not it will likely be for multiple rooms of 5.1 or biamping unused channels into a 5.1 or 7.1 system. The .2 is likel stereo subwoofer outputs :)

    Yamaha RX-Z9 First Look

KJ; Feel free to post your experiences with the Yamaha RX-Z9, but please start another thread for it if you will. I would like to keep this thread on supporting the RX-Z9 and peoples operational questions/etc. Thats all.

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Steve, I am a bit disappointed in your commentary listed above. It is the typical argument used by cable dealers/manufacturers to discredit folks that don't buy into the expensive exotics. As a professional reviewer I have found much of the high end (expensive) esoteric gear to be either...

    class A for subwoofer

Is this a joke or are you for real? Class A amps are far too inefficient (25% or less) for high power applications such as a subwoofer. In addition, the higher linearity of such amps are not necessary for subwoofer applications.

    Yamaha RX-Z9 First Look

KJ; At this point I would suggest looking into a different product since the Z9 is not working out for you. We can't offer you any help since our experience is with the American model that has worked flawlessly in our tests.

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Yes I am well aware of 1/4 wavelength distributed transformers though I don't consider that to be the same as electrical resonance exhibited in RLC networks. The problem is evoking a lumped circuit model for a distributed network (cable). When you calculate cable resonance using a single RLC...

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

John; Again Steve's FAQ clearly states that the cable is resonanting as if it were a lumped RLC circuit and proposes a solution " Cables don't resonant. Again what we are seeing here is the amplifier + cable + speaker interaction at frequencies where the characteristic impedance...

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Steve; Cables do NOT electrically resonant! They are not like a basic RLC lumped circuit in that respect. Please take a look at Rod Elliots article that we worked on together in the past titled Loudspeaker Cable Characteristic Impedance. What you are showing is interaction between...

    Speaker wiring

Chris; There is no reason why you can't get high performance wiring for low cost. Check out our various reviews where we demonstrate many lost cost cables outperforming the more expensive ones. With that, for your budget I suggest cables from: AVCable Bluejeanscable If you call...

    bi wiring question

While its true you benefit from reduced DC resistance of biwiring two identical cables as opposed to single cables, you also risk doubling your capacitance. This can be an issue with exotic cables that are already high in capacitance to begin with, especially when attached to sensitive amps...

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Steve what type of "resonance" are you referring to? Mechanical or electrical? I am hoping you are referring to mechanical since cables don't electrically resonate. Stereophile/Trasparant Cable unfortunately promotes that fallacy, but it just isn't true. Speaker Cable Resonance As for...

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Steve Dielectric Absorption is another unfounded snake oil claim that has little relevence for speaker cables. Its so called effects are already accounted for with the Cp measurement. See my brief article on this : Dielectric Absorption As for transient response differences between your...

Speaker Cable Faceoff 2: Introduction & Measurements

Actually I did remove the Zobel for the Goertz otherwise the capacitance measurement would be out of whack and vary based on cable length. I thought originally you told me those little beads were resistors, but I suppose even resistors have inductance so I do understand your concern. I...
