    Denon AVR-3805 Volume Issues

Some vendors set the 0db position in the volume knob to deliver the rated power output of the amp at the rated THD level. Above this point, you can expect a steady rise in THD. Thus, the volume knob is design to travel a lot before reaching this point starting maybe in the -90db to represent...

    Is it the Receiver?

Just a request for clarification on your problem. Is the monster "6-channel" selector box a speaker selector box for a 5.1 speaker set-up in each of your 5 rooms? How are the cables terminated or connected? Did I get you right, your set-up worked fine at first?

Speakers; When is good enough, enough

It matters. While I recognize that the recording process is not perfect and that unwanted sonic artifacts can easily enter the chain, the recording knowledge and the equipment we have are the best that sceince and engineering have to offer at this time. Every recording effort has its...

Capacitance # High Frequency roll off

The ideal cable would have zeros in all the RLC attributes. I think the goal of the cable to pass the signals with as little resistance and reactance as possible. So the lower the capacitance, inductance and resistance values, the better.

    Yamaha RX-Z9 First Look

So the logic that the more complex the gear, the more that Murphy's Law applies doesn't make sense to you? How do you that the product has better QA and firmware debugging over other brands?

DVI -> Component vs. VGA -> Component

My understanding is that DVI and VGA connections operate in the digital domain and are limited to 480p. Component connection operate in the analog domain. There really shouldn't be any comparison as DVI allows the conversion process to be done on the monitor which is presumably superior to...

    Rx-z1 4 Ohms

I'd be better of with an 8-ohm speaker. They can dip down to 3 ohms or lower at certain frequencies. Even their DC or voice coil resistance can be in the 3.2 ohm range. In Solid State gear, when in doubt, always go for higher impedance. Even if your gear can accept 4 ohms, to be safe, I'd...

    How long do cables last?

Is this good or bad? Care to share your hypothesis? If the skin effect is reduced, does that mean the cable's conductivity is better? Don't those expensive branded cables with their exotic geometries hype reduced skin effects?

    Ohm question

Impedance is a function of frequency that appears across the speaker load. Personally, I'd prefer to look at the impedance-frequency plot of a speaker which is more meaningful for me. Some speakers rated at 8-ohms can dip to 2 ohms at certain frequencies, usually in the bass region and rise...

    Rotel vs Nad pre amp

While I would personally prefer the ROTEL for its excellent built, I consider both products to be exceptional. Your deciding points may well be the features one has that you need more than the other. Also consider remote control flexiblity that you find more apt for you. I am not sure which...

    How long do cables last?

If the copper cable as seen through their transparent sleeves turn green over time, when it used to be reddish brown, does that mean it's gotten some oxidation or fungus? So should I replace?

Need help with B&W 700 series speaker selection!

You have an all-B&W set-up. Any reason why you would look past the B&W ASW750? It's a sealed sub that really goes down to 20hz if not mistaken. And if the REL Storm or Strata sound better for you, go for it.

    Help On sub purchase

Some velodyne users raise the sub a few inches off the floor to tame some perceived boominess. Plugging the port can also help. If it sounds better for you, why not?

    Separates on a budget

You can always try. Biamping without the use of active electronic crossovers between the preamp and power amp and bypassing the speaker crossovers make little sense to me.

    Separates on a budget

Martin Logan planars really need muscle to make them truly sing. If you need more power, try auditioning Aragon and Rotel multi-channel amps as well. BTW, what's you current amplifer power rating?

    Help...Son-NAD773 Dad-Denon3805

Agree with Annunaki. Between the two, the NAD would be my choice. It should be able to deliver more dynamic power on your 4-ohm load and produce less strain and heat on the amp than the Denon will.

    Speakers and Receivers

The Rotel RMB 1095 is one hell of a muscled amp that would have no problem driving even difficult loads. It's one of those "high current" amps that are conservatively rated (ALL channels driven into 8 ohms at full bandwidth at the specified THD). It's so heavy (at 75lbs) I think it has roller...

    seperate vs receiver showdown

I really wouldn't be surprised if some mid-to-high end AV receivers used as preamp can best or be at par with separate AV preamps costing as much or more. And I wouldn't realy mind using one. In fact I am eyeing a pre-owned AV receiver to upgrade my older Rotel AV preamp. But i'm a bit...

What is the temperature of your listening room?

My mordaunt shorts also use metal drivers but I don't think I can listen at 30c. That's the temp I start to perspire without doing anything.
