    Request for help: brains needed!

That is not cable distortion. What you are describing is noise pickup which migrates through the system and then gets amplified in the electronics (assuming the electronics lack adequate filtering). The cable is NOT the mechanism for the distortion and yes in this scenario shielded cables...

    Request for help: brains needed!

Richard; Cables DO NOT cause non-linear distortions, but don't take my word for it, check out what Bruno from Phillips has to say about it along with his test data from one of the worlds most accurate devices for measuring distortion in the following article: Debunking the Myth Of Cable...

Jack; I have had similar problems with my DVD 5900 and even 2900. In fact, I couldn't even play Star Wars Episode 1 on my 5900 when it was brand new. Check your firmware version. Having the latest firmware uploaded does help this problem alot.

    Luxman Replacement

Jsped; I am very familiar with the old Luxman receivers. Great Stuff! If I can make a recommendation, the A120mkii from Onix over at AV123 is a solid contender. Its a basic integrated 2CH amp, doesn't have a tuner and only a basic remote that controls volume but it sounds phenomenal...

    pre-amp or receiver?

Your receiver most likely does go down to 20Hz. The manufacturer rated 40Hz to 20kHz to give the illusion of more power since the power supply is a bit small to get that power rating at full bandwidth.

    DIY interconnects

Quad Shield RG6 will work very well for audio or video. In fact I am prewiring much of my new home with this cable. For video you need a cable with good shielding and 75 ohm characterstic impedance and this is what you will get with FRG6 or Quad Shield RG6.

    RX-Z9 with 4 Ohms loudspeakers

You don't necessarily need a speaker that will play down to 20Hz. What a semi fullrange speaker like an M80 can do is integrate seemlessly with a sub, usually better than a simple 2 way bookshelf speaker. You can still take advantage of the Z9 amps with the speakers set to small. You will be...

    RX-Z9 with 4 Ohms loudspeakers

You will be fine. My advice to you is try setting all speakers to small, crossover at 60Hz and let the sub do all the bass work. This will increase dynamics by saving amp power and may prove to be easier to integrate your sub with the rest of the system. You can always set the mains to large...

    DENON AVR 3805 and 4 Ohm ?

Libor; Your claims are questionable. Some amps run hot to the touch at idle, such as my Aragon 8008 series. Are you saying they wont drive 4 ohms b/c they run hot? Its how the heat is dissipated and if the product is designed to handle it is what matters. Many people here, including our...
