2CH Direct is a pure analog bypass for the main channels but with simultaneous parallel ADC to D/A coversion for the sub channels. From my tests, the only time the AVP would convert an analog signal to digital for the main channels was if you use bass management or engage in a DSP mode.

Yes good nearfield monitors are deliberately designed for that purpose. They usually taper off the highs a bit so they aren't overbearing. The crossover is usually tweaked per this type of application.
