Dr. Howard Johnson Discusses Skin Effect

If you were on TV you could do it because you would have a large supply of unobtanium.

    Have a problem! Please help..

Usually woofer rattling or bottoming out is an indication of too much power. Clipping usually results in blown tweeters or tweeter fuses. Did you always have this problem or is it a recent occurance? What kind of pre/proc are you using? Are you using any eq or bass compensation? Have you tried...

What are you listening to now?

When the question was first posted I was listening to A.S. Kang doing Terian Gulabi Buliyan and Novo Fronteira doing Abra A Boca. I followed those two with Deep Dish live in Toronto.

    Redefining Hi-End vs. Hi-Fi

Having been at this hobby longer than some have been alive ( I bought my first piece of equipment in 1967) I long ago came to the conclusion that I didn't care about specs or any of that stuff. No, I am not Technically unaware. I have a BS EE. My signature says it all The Ears Do Decide

    Shame on Bose

If you know someone who is thinking of buying B(l)ose speakers simply have them come over for a listening session after they have heard a B(l)ose demo. I have caused at least two studio owners to dump their 901's after a listening session in my sweet spot.

How old is old technology when it comes to speakers?

Anyone who thinks speaker technology has changed that much should listen to some Quad ESL57's. Introduced in 1957 and still have a midrange to die for!

    Hi-Fi Headphones are depressing

I gave the SR84's to an audio buddie this afternoon. I hadn't used them in more than 2 years. I just can't get used to the in your head sound. I'll just have to listen to my subwoofered ES panels. I am a batchelor so I can enjoy music and/or movies at any and all hours.

    Hi-Fi Headphones are depressing

I don't know about the Senheiser's but I have a pair of Stax SR84's and have listened extensively to the Sigma's and Omega's. All in all I just don't "get" headphones. Maybe it is that creepy in your head between your ears effect. Maybe it is the response irregularities. The only time headphones...

What was the first CD you ever bought?

Although I have a large vinyl collection surface noise has never been a problem for me. It may be that the LP's with excessive surface noise don't get played. I do have quite a few that people have mistaken for CD's. I also have some selections on both CD and vinyl. Interestingly, most of the...

    Accurate or 'hip wader' time?

Nero Express came with my CD burner and my DVD burner. I don't use it. I have been using Exact Audio Copy. This is a freeware CD copy program. I heard about it through J. A. of Stereophile. I have passed it on to several audio buddies and they are using it. It does audio copying much better than...

What was the first CD you ever bought?

My only real regret from that era is that I didn't try to by all the vinyl people were getting rid of.

    A/V receiver without a tuner??

I believe that MarkW is correct. I am not aware of any AV integrated amps. IMHO the advantage to using an integrated amp over a receiver is no money (yours) is wasted on a tuner section that may not have sonics all that good in the first place. Most of the manufacturers that make integrated amps...

    Crossover Question

Most pre-amps do not have a subwoofer out connector. The subwoofer amps that I am aware of all have a pass through for the high fq's. I am not sure on this but most of the pass throughs appear to be just that. I know that some have a high pass filtered output for the mains but that may not be...

    Musicians Who Suck

As far as musicians/singers who suck go Kenny *. is right at the top. The question about him is where does his taste come from. The Guy can play, he just has the most nasal pinched tone I've ever heard. His selection of music to play also leaves a lot to be desired.

    Speaker Matching.

The best speakers are the ones your ears (and budget) tell you are the best. The only way to select speakers is after hearing them. There are no best speakers for a given amp.

    audio

Most of Sergio Leone's movies are dubbed into english. Only the dialog from some of the actors is in english. On TV I regularly notice a discrepancy between lip movement and the sound. I also see it in movies although not as frequently. I think in many cases it is just sloppy work somewhere...
