    Yamaha RX-Z9 First Look

Why would a feature be more prone to fail on the Z-9 than any other receiver/processor? In fact, one advantage of Japanese electronics is their limitless resources to methodically do debugging and system testing of products prior to release. Yamaha has some of the highest reliability in the...

    Exclusive Denon AVR-3805 First Look!

Audiosouse; The background noise you are experiencing doesn't sound right. However, since I don't have a unit personally to test, I can't say one way or the other. I recommend using the Zone2 assignment for the bass section of your speakers, that way if there is a higher noise floor, you...

    Measuring Cable LCR Parameters

John; Just wondering if you have a cable sniffer? You always seem to find a post at any forum that discusses cabling. As soon as I say mudcats first post, I knew you would join the party ;)

    Measuring Cable LCR Parameters

Lets step back for the moment and verify a few basics: 1) Did you calibrate your LCR meter before doing this test? 2) Did you calibrate for full frequency range? If so, what is the bandwidth of this device? If your device is bandwidth limited to 10kHz, check to see what the accuracy is at...

    Denon 5803...BI-amp ???

Yes it is and I originally suggested this when I wrote my 5803 review. Since both receivers operate similarly with respect to amplifier assignment and zone2 audio, it can be done on both units.

    I-Link

The Denon DVD-5900 I am testing the RX-Z9 with does pass DVD-A and SACD via i.link. However, older models need to be modded by Denon to enable the i.Link feature. I will find out what serial#'s are affected for this.

    Gender of Audiophiles

Its funny that this hobby seems to be dominated by males, especially since women generally have better hearing. I suppose they are not as fanatical about audio as we are, they concern themselves with more important matters :o

Brickwall Digital Filters and Phase Deviations in Digital Audio

Over the years controversy has raged back and forth on whether brick wall filters used in digital audio (namely for CD playback systems) exhibit phase shifts in the audio band (20Hz to 20kHz). Audio critics, pundits and assorted experts have gone back and forth on this issue with out much...

    Exclusive Denon AVR-3805 First Look!

I see these type of statements pop up quite often so I thought I would address it here. Do NOT attempt to compare the capability of a receiver/amp based on the volume level you adjust to. Each manufacturer uses different potentiometers with different sensitivities and scales. Many of the...

Denon 2803 vs. Sunfire Ultimate Reciever for Jeff

The AVR-3805 is without a question an excellent bargain as far as receivers go. However, the AVR-5803 is a significant step up in terms of power and refinement. One could argue buying an AVR-3805 and putting the $3K saved into a dedicated 7CH amp and that certainly has its merits. However...

Denon 2803 vs. Sunfire Ultimate Reciever for Jeff

While the Sunfire is a powerful receiver, it is sad to see a receiver almost $3000 cheaper have over 15dB SNR advantage under the exact same 1watt test conditions.

    Exclusive Denon AVR-3805 First Look!

What is likely happening here is you have a speaker system, perhaps a 3-way where the wooder is wired out of phase from the mids/highs, to electrically sum at its crossover point. This can trick the auto setup into thinking your speakers are out of phase. This can also happen with other...

As far as I know, everything works thru Dlink3, however via EXT ins bass management and room correction don't work. Clint has the test unit so I will have him correct me if I am wrong

Octavio; Great catch! I think Clint misinterpreted the rating criteria for that category. We assign 50 points for processors that have stereo sub outs and 25 points with one sub out/mono. We will update the score card to reflect the change. Thanks. No sleep timer? Bummer, guess...

Why are objective listening tests not used for Audioholics reciever tests?

Yes I do agree Jerry. Shielding is usually not needed for speaker cables, but for interconnects and video cables that is another story. FYI, one of our contributors is an industy expert on EMC and signal integrity, Mr. Henry Ott. Check out the following cable article for more information...

Why are objective listening tests not used for Audioholics reciever tests?

Jerry, first off thanks for registering. I agree with you 100% here. However, we rarely do amplifier face off reviews for several reasons: 1) Too time consuming 2) Most manufacturers won't send gear if they know you are doing a face off 3) Usually doesn't make for good reading material...
