Its just a guideline not a requirement. 500ft^2 is roughly a 25' x 20' room. I am sure you can get by in a room that is less wide, but you really need a long room with high ceilings to cram all 11 speakers in and achieve an actual benefit of doing so.

The cooling fan will only run during sustained high power output such as when your cranking a multi channel music or movie disc or running continuous power measurement tests like I often do :) If the fan isn't coming on you simply aren't taxing the unit enough to heat up for it to kick in.
