Emotiva UMC-200 Preamp / Processor Review

Review Updates Guys, I made a few updates to the review based on the feedback I saw at the Emotiva forum. The pages should cache out in an hour so you can see them, but here are the running changes: Bass Management: The “enhanced bass” setting is a great option for those that want to have...

Emotiva UMC-200 Preamp / Processor Review

As I said in the review and in this thread, if you keep all HPF and LPF's set to 24dB/oct, the rolloff will ALWAYS be 24dB/Oct. If you change some of the HPF's to 12dB/oct then the summed response to the subwoofer channel when playing correlated audio sources will change.

Emotiva UMC-200 Preamp / Processor Review

nope it worked just fine and decoded all of the HD formats correctly. But, the Oppo BDP-105 playing back redbook or SACD sounds better IMO. Most people won't be using such a high caliber blu-ray player with this processor, but if they do, then I recommend using the analog connections.

Emotiva UMC-200 Preamp / Processor Review

Thanks I fixed the -10dB typo. The sub level change is the same for ALL products and has to do with the fact I was sending 5 channels of correlated audio into the processor while the sub out was summing them. For CD, its a 2CH source so the level wouldn't jump like that. For multi-channel...

Emotiva XPR-1 Mono-block Reference Power Amplifier

I asked and pleaded so many times. They claim its challenging to find reliable meters and the really good ones are pricey and big, meaning they would be like 2 inches or more deep and would require a bigger chassis or thicker front faceplate. These dogs would like killer with some blue...

DIY Loudspeakers: Can You Build "Better" Than Professional Designs?

A Note To Consider One food for thought I'd like to inject: I've noticed throughout the years that some of the esoteric designs I've tested had to be sent back NOT because they didn't sound or look fabulous but because they simply were incapable of playing loudly without either bottoming out...

DIY Loudspeakers: Can You Build "Better" Than Professional Designs?

Agreed, these are some great examples of companies that have slim margins in their products due to quality of parts and craftsmanship. Ascends is one that really stands out IMO b/c their stuff is very affordable despite the level of parts and performance offered.

DIY Loudspeakers: Can You Build "Better" Than Professional Designs?

The savings passed on to consumers by ID companies cutting out the middle man is often a myth. It's something quite evident when looking at the quality of parts and craftsmanship inside the box. Many B&M companies now sell direct too so this really levels the playing field.

Steve Feinstein no longer works for Atlantic Tech and he is no longer employed in the audio industry other than writing for Audioholics. He's got a good insight into the business and I enjoy his contributions to the site. I agree that anyone with the right knowledge and access to good parts...

The only pair I've heard were the ones built by one of our reviewers: Building Do It Yourself Loudspeakers — Reviews and News from Audioholics It's been so long since I heard them that I can't really comment on their sound.

Do MartinLogan speakers cost more because they are better speakers?

Actually I envy Consumer Reports. Their reviews are 1-2 paragraphs long, have either no or very crude measurements, and people worship them. I think they have a much better business plan

Do MartinLogan speakers cost more because they are better speakers?

LOL we've done blind tests. They are a lot of work and many manufacturers shy away from them. Some even dropped us as an advertiser when the results weren't in their favor sadly.

Do MartinLogan speakers cost more because they are better speakers?

Your greatly mistaken about this. Harman does market their DBT results, especially at dealer meeetings and at AES conventions. I used to do standards body work for telcom and the company I worked for applied similar tactics to establish themselves as an authorative subject expert. It also...
