Philharmonic Audio - 3-way open back ML-TQWTs designed by Dennis Murphy

They sound fine. I've directly compared them with a pair of Paradigm Mini Monitors v. 2. (I've also listened to a pair of Pioneer speakers of about the same size.) I just thought that the high frequency imaging was better with the Paradigms and that they sounded more spectacular with the speaker...

These old ten year old Paradigm Mini-Monitors v.2 that I've dug up have better high frequency soundstage and imaging. Definitely more depth - less restrictions where percussion and symbols seem to come from.

I don't know maybe the output is slightly less. Unless they are right next to each other, one would be hard pressed to hear the difference. I guess I'll send it back. How? Just standard Fedex? (Though UPS is just much more convenient for me.)

Well, I thought they sounded equal but when I listen to mono material (no switch,) the "A" speaker sounds like the highs are coming from in front of the speaker while in the "B" one, it sounds like it's coming from slightly behind the front of the speaker while the output more or less is equal...

Well, if you say they were fine when you shipped them, I see no need to send them back. Thanks anyway. I've triple-checked everything on different days. Gotcha. Thanks. I've pulled them out and back in from a half foot to 2 feet from the wall many, many many times and the nearest side...

Well, the soundstage/imaging is definitely more expansive and less in between the speakers and yes, there is some loss of mid-bass. Though on some (not all) recordings, the high end is much harsher when they are out-of-phase. Maybe it's possible that one of the tweeters is hooked up out-of phase?

I did this. My previous posts are stand exactly as I wrote.

Well, out of phase there is less mid-bass, I think - or it's more diffuse but it's not a whole lot missing. Yes, things are not centered but there is still some in the center if I sit 12 ft. back. Doesn't sound awful out of phase especially with the sub turned on - or even with it turned off...

Also interestingly, one of the recording that I said had HF percussion coming from the exact center between the speakers now comes from the left side with the phase reversed on one speaker, either the left or the right.

Well, I was going to say nothing's changed but in re-reading one of Dennis' earlier posts, he asked if one of my other speakers were out of phase. So I decided to reverse the phase into one of the monitors. (Now, - wire into + terminal.) Well, that got rid of the limited high frequency...

My left speaker is over 3 ft away from the left wall - though the right speaker is very distant from the right wall. I'm hearing a lack of high frequency soundstage and neither am I hearing an imbalance. Nonetheless, I'll do what you suggest and see what happens! (Tomorrow when I have time.)

Sure, I'll look into it. But I am referencing this system with recordings that I have had for years and heard with other systems and know what these recordings can sound like - soundstage-wise.

As I said in the last post, pulling them out makes the soundstage a little better. I finally found a few recordings where I can get a high frequency percussion instrument sound like it's coming from between the exact center of the two speakers but only if I pull them out from the wall 16" and...

Well, I've pulled them out from 6" to 16" inches from the wall. (They are on either side of bookshelf 8" deep.) That seems to help. But I've been called to work this morning on my day off. I'll listen to other recording later tonight.

Just double checked. All -'s to -'s and +'s to +'s even with the IC's. Even though it's been a few years, I remember not having this restriction with the dome tweeters of the B&W DM 302's with an AVA front end. Well, it's too bad that you came to AZ in Dec. I can now take some time off from...

In an A/B comparison with the A/B speaker switch on the receiver. As I said, I must be very sensitive here. For example when I hear cymbals on drums, I can localize the speakers. (I close my eyes and hear that they are coming from where they are coming out of your speakers.) As soon as I switch...

Oh, I've tried all sorts of degrees of toe-in and they're 4 1/2 feet apart. When I switch speakers, my perception of the highs immediately go outside the space between those speakers.

I know this was from over a month ago, but I only just caught up with this thread today. (Whew!) The monitors are lovely. There's a nice smooth cohesive sound to them from the highs down. The bass is nice and tight. You can listen to them all day (as I do sometimes) and never get listener...
