Do you think a high end CD/SACD player would sound better than a lower end CD/SACD player? I've never had a chance to do a side by side compare so I was wonder if any ya'll have? I am no where near to spending as much on a nice source such as a Mcintosh disk player. However, I am wondering if it would show a sound difference? Would the DAC be that important?

Depends - if you hook it to your system via digital, they will all sound the same :) So it really depends on your price range. If you aren't going to drop pretty big coin on it, you aren't going to see big gains IMO. At a few hundred, I feel they all sound pretty similar.

I second the 980. A fine player.

The biggest payoff in putting money into the system is your speakers since speakers are the single largest factor in how your system sounds.

I've got Totem Forest and a Tribe 5 main so I got good speakers. I'm thinking of putting a high end cd player in the system down the road so I was just wondering if spending 5 -6k on a player is worth it quality.

Seriously, I have no life.
I... if spending 5 -6k on a player is worth it quality.
Oh, wow. If you must, upgrade a sub, improve your room acoustics, buy a projector but run away from expensive digital sources.

I don't think it is worth spending that much on a player. With what you have now the weakest link is probably the quality of the recording, be it on a disc such as SACD, USB thumb drive, vinyl or streaming from a server. You can gain more by seeking out the high quality recordings and/or invest in a couple of good subs. Your speakers will thank you for helping them with a pair of good subs such as those by JL Audio and they probably would sound even better if you don't feed them with anything below 50 or even 60 Hz.

You don't think the DAC would make a difference though? Oops and I re read my post above. I meant to say I have a Tribe 5 centre and Totem Forests for mains. Oops.... Also, are XLR outputs common or are they only found on more expensive components? I've heard them on the mac and I think it's a huge difference to have.

I think J Garcia has a Blu-ray/SACD Oppo 83SE with a dac for sale?

What is the entire system? Which AVR do you have? To me for a system to have a $5-6K cd player I would imagine $30K speakers, $8-15K in amps and processors, and 5K in room treatments.... I don't use cd players anymore but had my share, while nothing cost me 5K I have heard them and notice no difference at all..
